McAfee was also slowing down Thunderbird on my laptop. But to fix that it is not necessary to turn off McAfee's real-time scanning completely. Real-time scanning can be configured so that it doesn't scan email attachments while still scanning everything else. This change was sufficient to correct the problem for me and now Thunderbird functions normally again.

Re: Thunderbird is very slow since version 17 update
Hi,
I still haven't seen a proper answer to this question. What changed in v17 that caused this significant slowdown? In prior versions we never had to do frequent compacting, which can take a long time to perform.
Thanks,
Ari

what changed is that your folders have grown larger over time

compacting takes a long time only if the folders being compacted are large folders.
Use only small folders for the handling of routine incoming mail

Re: Thunderbird is very slow since version 17 update
While I don't know the Thunderbird codebase, and have to take your word for it, it seems extremely unlikely that that's real issue. Something significant must have changed, as literally the moment after the upgrade to 17 (or perhaps it was one of the dot releases) happened, this slowdown occurred (Dec/Jan timeframe). I've noticed since then that it performs some kind of update processing/synchronization across all folders that takes awhile, often hanging TB in the process. If this happened in the background before, it was so fast you never saw it. I didn't change my config, and there was no sudden growth in my email.
I did try to review the release notes for some of the 17.x releases (http://www.mozilla.org/en-US/thunderbir ... easenotes/ , http://www.mozilla.org/en-US/thunderbir ... easenotes/), but nothing stood out.
In any case, I'll follow your instructions. I'll have to see how to break up my main Gmail IMAP inbox. I suppose I'll have to just label as "Archive" most of the older mail, or perhaps several other labels. Any suggestions?
Thanks,
Ari

Re: Thunderbird is very slow since version 17 update
unless you actually need it, uncheck [ ] Enable Global Search and Indexer.
never use the Inbox for storage.
use only small folders for handling New mail (small, meaning a folder that compacts in less than 1 second)

- to move mail out from the Inbox, you don't have to "label" anything.
simply use the built-in Archive function http://kb.mozillazine.org/Archiving_your_e-mail

I faced the same issue and loading emails was extremely slow
but the problem disappeared when I disabled email scanning by anti-virus (Avast)

Just a note: This does NOT happen with Thunderbird on the Mac platform. My Windows 7 Thunderbird is annoyingly SLOW even after following the steps outlined here. It all began with the latest update and a fix needs to done.

Re: Thunderbird is very slow since version 17 update
LauraJRB, as far as I can tell from using Thunderbird 24.0.1 on a Windows platform there is nothing to be fixed in so far as the program itself is concerned, at least not in regard to performance.
* How is that mail account set up, as POP or IMAP?
* Are you using an antivirus and/or a firewall program? Which one(s)?

Re: Thunderbird is very slow since version 17 update
Well, I had the same problem - PC. Windows 8, Thunderbird 24.0.1 - stated slowing down on simple delete functions etc. quite annoying. After reading the comments here, I deactivated the McAfee mail scan, it was all back to normal.
