Click-to-play behavior in Firefox 24

Post by flaneurb »

The click-to-play behavior seems to have changed. I have

Code: Select all

plugins.click_to_play;true
in about:config.

In Firefox 23, if I had the Flash Player set to "Ask to Activate" on the plug-in page, I could open several YouTube pages as separate tabs and play the videos one by one.

Now, in Firefox 24, it seems that there is not just an additional step but also some sort of setting that is retained as long as the browser session exists.
Clicking on the plugin icon, gives me a dropdown (doorhanger?) with Allow Now or Allow and Remember.

The "Allow Now" option apparently is not limited to the instance of the plugin in the particular tab but will affect all subsequent tabs opened to YouTube video links. The video will start playing in each tab subsequently opened (as if I've now set videos to play automatically in YouTube as not to require a click-to-play).

Is there some way to make the Allow Now option affect only the current YouTube tab and not other YouTube tabs which I open subsequently?

This has been discussed at length in forum. IF you want to take a look at Mozilla reasoning look at the pdf.

I personally don't agree with the changes myself, but there is an addon that reverts it to the old behavior.

AFAIK, no as the permissions are stored by domain. You can view and/or change permissions for all domains using about:permissions page

Thanks for the helpful links. I'll ask the mods to close this one as a sort of duplicate.

I don't like that the new behavior isn't click-to-play anymore. It's click-to-open-a-doorhanger now.

Before it was simply click on the video/plugin and it will play. Now it requires a click to open the doorhanger, moving the mouse to the doorhanger and clicking "allow now".
