error: platform version 23.0.1 not compatible (FIXED)

Post by Gubbio »

I tried to install upgrade 23.0.1 this AM, and it seemed to go normally.

When I tried to run it, I got the following message:
error: platform version 23.0.1 is not compatible with >min version=23

FF wouldn't run at all.

I "Googled" and found references to this error for older versions, but nothing that I could understand to help me.

Right now, I'm back on Version 23.0

Should I try to reinstall 23.0.1, or is there some conflict I should be aware of? I haven't made any other recent changes to my system and never have had problems with an upgrade before.

• For what it's worth, I have a copy of "Portable" on my machine as well, in a completely different folder, etc., and have been running them both for months with no conflict -- until yesterday.

I was able to run them at the same time, if for example, I wanted to copy a link from one to the other.

But yesterday, If FF was running, and I clicked on Portable, another copy of FF ran.

Conversely, if Portable was running, and I clicked on FF, an other copy of Portable ran. I have no idea what's linking the two. They've never been linked before.

"Portable" has been upgraded to 23.0.1 (through a DL and reinstall) and is running fine.

I'm puzzled. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Thanks,
-Mike

Close all applications and reboot the computer.
Delete any downloaded or partially downloaded installer files.
Clear the browser cache (of whatever browser you are using to download FF) and the Windows Temp directory.
Shutdown any anti-virus software you are running.
Download a new copy of the full installer from www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/all
Delete the directory C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox
Run the installer.
Restart the anti-virus program.

Dan,

I can follow you on most of that, except this:

"Delete any downloaded or partially downloaded installer files."

Where would they be? Wouldn't deleting "C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox" take care of that?

Looks like I'm doing a clean install and should KEEP MY PROFILE FOLDER.

Would uninstalling Version 23 from the control panel help in this clean-up? Or, it that unnecessary?

I'll wait till I hear from you.

Thanks,
-Mike

1. Downloaded or partially downloaded installer files may be found in the Windows Temp directory, not in C:\Program Files.... The purpose of that step is to ensure that installation is performed with a new, clean copy of the installer .exe file rather than from any cached copy that might be present on the drive but corrupted during or after it was downloaded.

2. Uninstalling from the control panel may leave the C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox directory behind. Usually that's not a problem but when trying to resolve problems like this, removing the installation directory can sometimes make a difference in results.

Thanks Dan,

It worked.

I realized after I wrote that "Profile" is in "AppData" and not in "Mozilla."

FF and Portable are still "calling" each other, but that's more of a curiosity than a problem.

I also learned what \Win\Temp is for. I never look at it. I know there's a lot of junk in the Temp folder under my name in "Users." That's the one I routinely clean out.

Thanks again.
