Thunderbird 24 "Not responding"

Post by Camelbreath »

Thunderbird 24.0.1 / Windows 7 Ultimate 64 up-to-date / Core i7 3.2 / 12 gig ram / Plenty of HDD space

All of a sudden with virtually every click Thunderbird 24.0.1 stops and I get a "not responding" message in the upper bar. I wait a bit and the program starts up again, then I click and wait, again and again.

I re-installed TB to no avail. What can I do?

Thanks to those who know more than me,
Joe

Moving to Thunderbird Support.

Does the same thing occur if you launch the application in Mozilla Safe Mode? http://kb.mozillazine.org/Safe_mode

* How is that mail account set up, as POP or IMAP?
* Is your mail service from an ISP, corporate e-mail system or Web-based?
* Are you using an antivirus and/or a firewall program? Which one(s)?
* Do you regularly compact your folders? Check http://kb.mozillazine.org/Compacting_folders for more information on compacting folders.

Setup is POP
Mail service is from my internet service provider
Using Macafee
Folders compacted

This phenomenon started out of the clear blue sky yesterday. Before that all was normal.

Are you able to run the program in Windows XP compatibility mode in Windows 7? I can't get TB to run cleanly in Windows 8 either, but when I right click on the start icon, then right click on the Thunderbird start icon in the pop up box, then click "properties", then go to the (Compatibility) tab, there is an option to run the program in Windows XP SP 3 mode, and all the problems seem to go away. The only inconvenience is that you have to approve the program to make changes to the system before it opens. Once it's set it will always open in compatibility mode until you change it back. I was frustrated when the change to V24 happened, because I couldn't remember how to get it to open in compatibility mode, but found it again. Thank goodness. It goes non-responsive every time I open it in Windows 8 mode.

PS: I know this isn't a fix, but it solves the irritation factor!

Did McAfee update recently?

Waddy, I am running Windows 7 not 8
Dan, I have McAfee and TB both to auto update and as I recall both have updated recently.

Try clearing all references to Thunderbird from the McAfee permissions lists and then reboot Windows. See if that resolves anything.

The last procedure seems to have done the trick. Is is advisable to re-enable the McAfee functions?

The "not responding" is back with vengance. I went into McAfee and deleted TB from its list and that seems to have solved the problem. Now I have some concerns that bad stuff might sneak in the back door. In anyone's considered opinion, do I have any vulnerabilities?
Thanks,
Joe

I'm having the same problem here. I removed the permissions from mcafee and restarted but still can't do anything without Thunderbird stalling :(

Actually I would suggest that you not re-enable McAfee. While I don't suggest that your run without any security software functioning, the common factor in this thread seems to be that McAfee is causing problems with Thunderbird. Replacing McAfee with a good freeware option like Avast for anti-virus (and Comodo for the firewall if you wish) should let you use Thunderbird without the stalling but still keep your system secure.

I am getting all these exact problems using Windows 7 and Microsoft Essential virus software. I have tried all the options mentioned to date on this post. The problem started the same time as "Camelbreath" and I guess for the same reason
Is there anyone out there who can solve this please - Do you read these posts Mozilla ?????
