Yes, Avast is one freeware option that seems to be working for many.

I'm using Windows 7 and having the same problems with Thunderbird 24, I finally went back to 17 and it works great.

Okay, I've removed McAfee and downloaded AvastPro. Looks good thus far. Cross your fingers!!

Running newly updated TB 24.0.1 under 64-bit Win 7, I experienced exactly the same problem - unresponsive, hanging, and highly irritating TB. Curiously, previous version worked fine. Here is how I solved it and made TB zip fast once again:

1) Click "Tools", then "Add-ons"
2) Select "Extensions"
3) Remove "Test Pilot 1.3.9"
4) Restart TB

I've never installed this "Test Pilot" extension. The &##!@! thing must have come with the 24.0.1 update. You can find its reviews - it's buggy and gets the lowest possible score.

It might have improved simply because it caused an update the some of the core addon files, and not specifically related to Test Pilot.

In version 31 (or perhaps even one of the 24.x versions), Test Pilot is removed.

Hi WaddyT. I've read your posts about Thunderbird. And Firefox at viewtopic.php?p=13426625#p13426625 The combination of having problems with both TB and FF is interesting.

For Thunderbird (not in compatibility mode)
1. how long before it gets slow? And, please tell us how much CPU and memoery TB is using according to taskmgr
2. had you tried (both) Windows in safe mode then started TB in safe mode?
3. how many pop accounts do you have?
4. how many messages in your gmail account? (according to https://mail.google.com/mail/u/0/?pli=1#all )
