WSM
It's the automatic compacting which doesn't do anything.

http://kb.mozillazine.org/Deleting_mess ... P_accounts
You might consider adding a boolean mail.imap.expunge_option setting using the config editor, setting it to 2. That will automatically expunge the deleted messages when there are at least 20 messages waiting to be expunged. That is a separate mechanism than compacting, and is especially useful if you typically have small messages (due to the high minimum threshold for automated compacting)

No it hasn't been fixed. The folders still grow.

Rereading your postings, I see this profile is on a network drive.
Does problem go away if you move your profile to local drive?

Nope the profiles are stored locally on the c drive in all cases and in their default location.

By the way the issue is still there in the latest Thunderbird.

Did you try using the mail.imap.expunge_option setting ? That supplements compacting with expunging. They are different mechanisms.

Uni1991,
Please try version 31 beta from http://www.mozilla.org/en-US/thunderbird/channel/ - it has a change or two in this area. Please tell us results. And, if someone locks this thread because of age, then please private message me. Thanks

Re: Auto Compacting Folders doesn't actually do anything
Time to rebump this issue.
Running latest version Thunderbird and the compacting issue is still there. The total storage Tbird was taking up was 5.8gb of disk space for 447mb of emails. Although this bug has a benefit if your accidentally delete an email you can get it back. However it does waste disk space.

Re: Auto Compacting Folders doesn't actually do anything
You didn't answer my question about whether you tried using the mail.imap.expunge_option setting.
Please explicitly state what version you are using as saying "you are using the latest version" is ambiguous (the servers are supposedly not configured anymore to support the setting in tools -> options -> advanced to check for updates to Thunderbird, while help -> about Thunderbird does check). It also makes it difficult if somebody looks at this thread several months later to figure out what version you were using.

Re: Auto Compacting Folders doesn't actually do anything
Today it's 31.2.0 I should have said the latest release to the public and not the beta channel.
Basically we are discussing the that the option under Tools > Options > Advanced > network and disk space doesn't actually do anything and hasn't for many versions.
You shouldn't really have to change mail.imap.expunge_option setting via config editor to get Thunderbird to do something it should by default.
Now I've got to wait until I have a lot of messages to delete.

Re: Auto Compacting Folders doesn't actually do anything
Just discovered 7 gigs of data on my other laptop yet only 430mb of mail in my gmail. Version 31.3 of Thunderbird I wonder if the issue will ever get fixed.

Re: Auto Compacting Folders doesn't actually do anything
tanstaafl, do you recall the bug # which has the modified folder columns addon and shows deleted space, not just folder size?
