Firefox 31, want the previous newtab. Dont like the new one.

Post by zemega »

Hi, today my installation of Firefox updated itself to version 31. With it comes changes to the newtab page. I'll be honest, I don't like it. the thumbanils has been downsized a lot. There is a 50% unused space. It doesn't look good in large monitor at all. So my question is, can I revert to the previous newtab version inside Firefox 31?
Side Note: I'm using Ubuntu 14.04.

Edit: What I hate is the downsizing of the thumbnails. I can install add-on, but I'm not interested. I want a simple solution that I can show to normal people with varying screen size. So no messing with CSS file.

Install New Tab Tools, and then go to preferences(advanced). From there you can modify a variety of settings to get New Tab Page into old appearance.

No .css file editing required.

You could try this:

open about:config
find browser.newtabpage.columns
and change the value to your liking (default seems to be 3)

No need to mess with css nor install addon.

Edit: You can check browser.newtabpage.rows too.

Australis was bad enough, now they've screwed up the New Tab page. If something works, why the hell can't they leave it alone!

This does not remove the stupid search box.

For me, changing 'browser.newtabpage.enabled' to false in about:config removes both the tiles and search box.

thanks for your comments
BUT it seems to me that the about:config stuff does not solve those problems:
Image < click to enlarge

1) at the bottom, i've got this empty "box"
2) it makes my 3 rows smaller
3) the google search box is still there

thanks in advance for any help

You have a broken extension. Try Firefox safemode

You are right! The white space at the bottom is caused by 'New Tab Wallpapers' not working properly now - I have the same issue. Something else they've screwed up!! On my netbook I also have to scroll the page to see all the thumbnails.

Maybe the extension author needs to be notified. Lose the attitude it gets old very quickly

That bottom area is the #newtab-margin-bottom. Doesn't seem to do much atm.

Thanks. Did it.
Had to install everything in the newtab (which is not userfriendly at all unfortunately)

PLUS: I lost all the add-ons too !!! They're not even listed in the add-on menu anymore !

and it still looks awful, with so much space lost:

And that Google Search box?!

If I'm not mistaken, Mozilla had wanted to sell ads somewhere inside the new tab page for some time now...could this newest "update" be a step in that direction so the change isn't as "jarring?" I can only assume that more irreversible UI changes will come to the new tab page.

People want to keep tiles, just get rid of the Google box.
New Tab Tools does just that.
