SeaMonkey 2.28 release delayed

Post by rsx11m »

Per https://groups.google.com/forum/#!topic/mozilla.dev.apps.seamonkey/r5_LaB4YPcY, the next version of SeaMonkey will be released within the next two weeks (with today being the merge day for the corresponding Firefox and Thunderbird 31.0 releases which are scheduled for tomorrow).

Unfortunately, things a still not quite sorted out with builds based on Gecko versions >29.0 (where the current SM 2.26.1 release comes from) but progress has been made. Thus, if a 2.28 beta 1 can be built, the 2.28 release should follow shortly after that. If it doesn't work out, further backports from the 2.28 branch will be made to release a 2.26.2 instead.

Thus, keep your fingers (and toes) crossed!

So usually a new release is to address issues with security. By this delay for the next version, what are we currently faced with and is there anything to be concerned with?

Since the release candidate is delayed, would it be better to switch to a beta version or keep using SeaMonkey 2.26.1? I do use SeaMonkey for online banking. I always thought using a beta version would be more of security risk than using a release candidate? Since the release candidate maybe outdated would it be better to use a beta until 2.28 or 2.29 release candidate comes out? Which SeaMonkey beta would be more secure than release candidate 2.26.1 if any? Thanks in advance.

Stay on 2.26.1 until a new release is out. All current betas are older than this release, so this would be a bad bargain. If they manage to get out a 2.28 beta 1 within a week, 2.28 final will follow soon after the beta has been verified to be good.

No update on this schedule in the newsgroup thread or on IRC.

I deleted my previous post. I figured somethings out. Here is my new question, What happen to the newer beta versions of Seamonkey? Are the developers basically skipping a beta cycle? I am surprised there not skipping more & going to the newer Gecko engine.

Is there how the cycle goes normally?

What is this newer Gecko engine?

If all had gone as expected, & starting with the 2.26 Release, things would have looked like this:

Code: Select all

2.26 Release  2.26.1 Release  2.28 Release   FF 31 Release
2.27 Beta     2.28 Beta       2.29 Beta         32 Beta
2.28 Aurora   2.29 Aurora     2.30 Aurora       33 Aurora
2.29 Nightly  2.30 Nightly    2.31 Nightly      34 Nightly
Fire 750, bring back 250.

These are the four main channel names and when people refer to Nightly they are referring to the Nightly development channel and not the Aurora channel.

What is this newer Gecko engine?

https://wiki.mozilla.org/Releases

Standard Support
SeaMonkey 2.26 Based on Gecko 29 Released on 2014-06-16

To avoid pasting them all, there are Gecko 29, 32, 33, and 34 engines for Seamonkey.

Oh I think the therube knows about what the Gecko is and versions, just was asking you what you meant by that.

SeaMonkey 2.26.1 (you forgot the .1) Released on 2014-06-16 existed only because they could not build the 2.27 Release at time (would have had Gecko 30.0) and the 2.28 (Gecko 31.0) looks to be delayed as this thread is about. The 2.26 was released on May 2.

James, I will try to explain it in writing.

What was throwing me off is rsx11m said all the betas are older than the current release and the wiki page said SeaMonkey 2.29 currently in the beta channel. I think I understand now, for the moment beside the current release version, the current maybe a little less stable version would be 2.29a2 because there is no 2.29b1 beta that has been built.

rsx11m is using SeaMonkey/2.29a2

a2 means it is a build on the Aurora development channel. Nightly would be a1 and Beta is b#. Nightly, Aurora, Beta and Release are the main development channels.

The Nightly builds of Firefox (like I am using) had a1 on end but they removed that sometime back and locked the build date in their attempt to make the useragent less unique like they did with the Releases. This of course makes it harder to do support.

well rsx11m it's Tuesday August 5 in LA (the city of angels), two weeks after Firefox 31 was released.
Will there be a Seamonkey 2.28 beta coming out this Tuesday afternoon or later this week? Or will there be a 2.26.2 release instead if version 2.28 is not ready?
TICK, TOCK, TICK, TOCK...the clock is ticking! what is the latest status on SM 2.28 (if any)?
