QuickTime update ruined some things on my computer

Post by syberani »

I have a new problem. On 7\31\2015 Apple sent a QuickTime update for Windows. On that day I stopped being able to do jigsaw puzzles, because the sites for them don't open. I looked through my browsers and I examined Preferences in Sea Monkey. Under Helper Applications in the Action column on the right side, all except four items in the list said, "Use QuickTime plugin 7.7.7 (in SeaMonkey)." They gave me a choice to use Windows Media Player or to "Use Other". There is also a picture of a jigsaw puzzle piece before each place that says Use QuickTime plugin 7.7.7. Should I go to an earlier version of QuickTime? Using the QuickTime plugin doesn't seem to be an option. Should I choose to "Use Windows Media Player" in my Preferences Action column, or to "Use Other"? In the meanwhile, I am finding more game and puzzle sites that are not opening. They just show a blank white page. I am concerned that the problem may be in a much deeper part of the computer than Preferences. Maybe I should get another computer. I am not amused. Help!

Thank you,

URL ?

URLs ?

And they use Quicktime (& not Flash, or <cough> Java)?

Will IE open the sites, play the games?
Fire 750, bring back 250.

I am a newbie. I don't know much about computers or even how to use this forum productively, but here goes. I stopped being able to do jigsaw puzzles on jigzone.com. When they send me a puzzle or when I try to use their site, I only see a white empty page. I am finding more game and puzzle sites that are not opening, such as shockwave.com and thejigsawpuzzles.com. There was one more, but I don't remember the name. I found it on a search engine, and for some reason it didn't show up in SeaMonkey history, so I don't know the URL. I later discovered that IE and Chrome are also averse to opening puzzle/game sites. The first place where I saw a plethora of QuickTime plug-ins was SeaMonkey Preferences in Helper Applications. I tried to look at my C drive, but I quickly discovered that it is not easy to see the file system in Windows 7 like in XP. I couldn't find helper applications in IE or Chrome, so I don't know what is causing the problem there, but it all happened when the QuickTime update arrived. I know that the QuickTime installer removed Java, and I wonder if that caused the problem. I also suspect that the Registry and/or some other deeper part of the inner workings is swimming in QuickTime plug-ins. BTW is there a particular source of Java that is compatible with SeaMonkey? You mentioned Flash. I tried to download Adobe Flash. My other browsers have accepted it, but SeaMonkey still occasionally gives me an error message telling me Flash is off. SeaMonkey Preferences suggests that I change some items in the Action column of Helper Applications from "Use QuickTime plug-in 7.7.7 (in SeaMonkey)" to Windows Media Player. Any thoughts?

> jigzone.com ... I only see a white empty page.

Me too.
So until they decide what they're doing...

> shockwave.com and thejigsawpuzzles.com

http://www.shockwave.com/help/index.jsp
http://thejigsawpuzzles.com/help/

Both load fine for me.
(I didn't try any games though.)

Shockwave.com says it needs Shockwave to run.
Do you have that?
Note that Shockwave & Flash are different, even though Flash calls itself "Shockwave Flash" (go figure!).

> IE and Chrome are also averse to opening puzzle/game sites

Then it doesn't sound like a SeaMonkey issue, per se.
So HOSTS file blocking something, or A/V or...?

> the QuickTime installer removed Java

I'd find that very odd.
QuickTime being Apply & Java being Oracle.

> Flash is off

What does about:plugins show?
What does Addons Manager -> Plugins show?
Fire 750, bring back 250.

After the update downloaded (AFTER!) I found this on Apple Support page (See URL below)
https://support.apple.com/kb/DL837?view ... cale=en_US
{QuickTime for Java and QuickTime PictureViewer are no longer installed by default. They are removed if you have a previous version of QuickTime on your PC. If you still need these legacy features, you can add them back using the new custom setup option in the installer.}

I must change settings so that nothing is updated automatically! I must get some control so that I can check update information BEFORE ALLOWING THEM or at least be able to use a custom install. I have discovered that jigzone.com is on for my friends who do not have QuickTime. There is also a website (http://www.isitdownrightnow.com/) which says jigzone.com is up

Flash is not mention in Add-ons manager or About Plug-ins, but I did download Flash separately for each browser. In SeaMonkey it got rid of the error message about security in the last version, but not the error messages about Flash being off.

http://www.jigzone.com/ is back up.

http://www.jigzone.com/puzzles/daily-jigsaw works, needing nothing more then Adobe Flash (aka Shockwave Flash, aka NPSWF32_18_0_0_209.dll).

www.jigzone.com has nothing to do with QuickTime or Java or anything except for Flash.

shockwave.com and thejigsawpuzzles.com are working for me now too. I don't know why I could not open them before, or why I can open them now, but I want to thank you for your time and energy in helping me. I still have a couple of things to resolve, but I am making progress. Anyway, I can do jigsaw puzzles with my morning coffee again
(grin). All along http://www.isitdownrightnow.com/ and http://downforeveryoneorjustme.com/ said that my jigsaw puzzle sites were all working fine and that the problems were in my computer. I'm going to do a jigsaw puzzle now (grin again).
