Page check by XP user?

Post by terrypin »

A friend sent me a link to his site under development asking for my feedback. But this section is giving me puzzling behaviour:
http://gif2015.iwpdesign.com/index.php/video-gallery-2

It works fine on my wife's Win 7 PC. And on my iPad:

But on my XP Pro PC I have none of the familiar buttons (play, pause, stop, full screen).

Yet another section of the same site, 'Video gallery', is OK!

I'd appreciate an XP user trying it, and also welcome any ideas on a possible cause please.

FWIW, I accepted this morning's recommendation to update to 41.0.1.

I suspect that will significantly reduce my already probably lowish chance of a response from an XP user!

What prompted the move anyway? The post isn't really about 'web development' - it's simply looking for a confirmation or otherwise of that behaviour. So that I can decide whether it's down to my PC or not, before giving my friend feedback.

A reply that another XP user sees the same thing might be interesting but posting it here might result in a response from someone with coding skills that would be much more informative as to why that it happening.

Running that site through the W3C Validator identifies 12 HTML errors plus numerous CSS errors (602) plus 551 CSS warning conditions. Tweaking the code to correct some of those might be what is necessary to resolve the issue.

Thanks, both good points. Although on the first one I'd ideally have liked the opportunity of both types of feedback!

Re the second, I'll suggest he tries the W3C validation himself. I'm no HTML expert so maybe there's an obvious explanation, but I'm puzzled why those errors don't seem to cause problems in Win 7.

I can confirm that Firefox on WinXP doesn't have codecs for playing the mp4 videos in gallery-2. The other gallery has a choice of formats, so Firefox chooses ogv and plays it.

Thanks, understood, appreciate the fast response which clears up the inconsistency.

Dan: Turns out that move to specialist territory was a wise choice, thanks. :)

Not sure if you still need some input, but I'm on XP with FF 25 (changed UA to FF 32).

The gallery you linked to (2nd) shows a completely blank field where the video is supposed to be. When I right-click it, I get the right-click context menu of the Quicktime plugin. The thumbnails show fine, though the Previous and Next arrow buttons are overlapping the thumbnails.

Video gallery #1 works great. I get the Flow Player fed through Flash.

Thanks, that's an interesting result, even worse than mine.

BTW, I'm out of my technical depth here, but I'm curious: what does "changed UA to FF 32" mean please? And are you still using Firefox version 25?

Yes, still FF 25. You can change the user agent string by going to about:config and modifying general.useragent.override. If it isn't there, there are sites that explain how it works.
