Data Manager improvement

Post by unbeleevabull »

Let me start by saying I do not like Data Manager at all. Although the premise was to have a central data manager, it has fallen short on functionality. From the old messages I found, it seems it was added in 2010. It apparently hasn't had any functionality added since then. IMO, it would be better to use it only for Permissions, Preferences (site specific), and Form Data. Cookies and Passwords need more functions to manage effectively. Unfortunately, most of the extensions which help with this, don't work in SM. At a minimum, I'd like to see the "*" (all domains) choice list all cookies and passwords. I can get that list for passwords using Saved Password Editor extension, but the info for it says it uses a dialog built in to SM. If so, then why wouldn't Data Manager use that or at least have a button to open it? To have to click on indivdual domains to even see which ones have passwords or cookies and thus have access to the relevant tab is awkward.

Obviously if SM is going the way of the Dodo bird soon, then feature requests like this are pointless.

Well, it's completely pointless to do "feature requests" on MozillaZine anyway.
Tip of the day: If it has "toolbar" in the name, it's crap.

have to click on indivdual domains to even see which ones have passwords or cookies

You can filter (to an extent) on Cookies or Passwords, & the domain list will only show you those that contain said items.

I thought there was a general Data Manager enhancement bug, but didn't see it?
There are any number of "this doesn't work bugs".

Anyhow, Kairo isn't working on it any longer, so... either someone picks it up - in full, or some particular issue may get fixed, at some point in time, or not.

Yeah, I actually installed CookieKeeper last time I needed to do any cookie management. Because I tried to do it using the built-in tools and oh my god the Data Manager is terrible.

BTW, for the cookies, you can always use this option:

    chrome://communicator/content/permissions/cookieViewer.xul

If I have to make changes I use the SQLight Manager https://github.com/lazierthanthou/sqlite-manager for SM. A realy handy tool to access all databases in your profile.

Oh, hey, the old (useful) cookie controls survive!
If I'd known that at the time, I wouldn't have installed an extension.
