30 delay in receiving new messages whether 1 or 12 messages

Post by eggdoc »

for about 3 months now, the downloading of new messages is delayed by about 30 seconds...I have attempted solutions found on the internet without success. the status bar tells me quickly that there are 1, 5, 10 or whatever messages to download, but then there is the 30 second delay... have worked with tech support for the server I have my account..i am using version 38.3.0... thanks

* How is that mail account set up, as POP or IMAP?
* Is your mail service from an ISP, corporate e-mail system or Web-based?
* Are you using an antivirus and/or a firewall program? Which one(s)?
* Do you regularly compact your folders? Check http://kb.mozillazine.org/Compacting_folders for more information on compacting folders.
* What security software are you running on that system?

How is that mail account set up, as POP or IMAP?

POP

* Is your mail service from an ISP, corporate e-mail system or Web-based?

ISP (I have worked extensively with them)

* Are you using an antivirus and/or a firewall program? Which one(s)?

NORTON AV; WINDOWS FIREWALL (I have tested with both off/disabled with no change in results)

* Do you regularly compact your folders? Check http://kb.mozillazine.org/Compacting_folders for more information on compacting folders.

YES (do manually every day or other day)

* What security software are you running on that system?

WINDOWS DEFENDER (tried turning off too)

I suggest you enable POP3 logging per http://kb.mozillazine.org/Session_logging_for_mail/news and look in the log file afterwards to see if you see any sign of an external program interfering, or lots of repeated errors.

Does your ISP support IMAP? If they do I suggest you create a IMAP account for them (it can co-exist with the POP account if you configure the POP account's server settings to "leave messages on server") and see if the IMAP account has similar performance problems.

Think about adding a POP account with Gmail and seeing if it has the same problem. I'm not suggesting it as a workaround, just to help troubleshoot by verifying this is a account specific problem (which would let you rule out a number of potential culprits).

I repeat my suggestion that you create a POP3 log file. Looking at it is I suspect the only way to find out what is causing the problem. You could copy the log file to http://pastebin.com/ , and post a link to it.

As an aside I noticed a EXPIRE 31 USER response in that log file which I think means that your email provider is warning the email client that they have a general policy of automatically deleting messages after 31 days, though it can vary depending upon the user.

I'm seeing references to both a Dovecot server and a comcast.net Zimbra POP3 server . Do you have only one POP account in your profile? Its awkward interpreting the log file since you started with the connections already established.

2015-11-05 09:06:04.913000 UTC - 0[d11140]: POP auth: server caps 0xE1CAA, pref 0x1C00, failed 0x0, avail caps 0x1C00
2015-11-05 09:06:04.913000 UTC - 0[d11140]: (GSSAPI = 0x100000, CRAM = 0x2000, APOP = 0x4000, NTLM = 0x8000, MSN = 0x10000, PLAIN = 0x1000, LOGIN = 0x800, USER/PASS = 0x400)

and later on:

2015-11-05 09:06:05.083000 UTC - 0[d11140]: POP auth: server caps 0x14AA, pref 0x1C00, failed 0x0, avail caps 0x1400
2015-11-05 09:06:05.083000 UTC - 0[d11140]: (GSSAPI = 0x100000, CRAM = 0x2000, APOP = 0x4000, NTLM = 0x8000, MSN = 0x10000, PLAIN = 0x1000, LOGIN = 0x800, USER/PASS = 0x400)

appears to be consistent with two different POP servers reporting their capabilities, when asked.

It was very useful that you added the optional timestamp argument. Is it possible you are interpreting a nine second delay as being thirty seconds? The log starts at 09:06:04.661000, starts downloading a message at 09:06:15.085000 and has finished downloading it at a 09:06:15.095000 nine seconds later. It looks like the actual download and getting authenticated were each a fraction of a second, but you spent about 8 seconds waiting for a folder lock to be released. Its not clear why.

Is your profile on a file share?

I have a COMCAST IMAP account and it usually works pretty well. I don't have any experience with their POP account. I suggest you think about adding a Comcast IMAP account (while keeping your existing COMCAST POP account) and see if that has the same problem.

I have both a comcast account and my business server (galluzzibooks.com). My business is out of home office. There is no delay with the comcast account and my other server does not change regardless of which account is default...my business server is default now.

I am not sure how to start the log file any other way other than clicking on the .bat file I created... when I do, thunderbird automatically starts with the bat file.

My profile is not on a file share. I know that the download of new messages when I first had the problem was longer than nine seconds. Present test results is 10-11 seconds.

question, when you indicated that "about 8 seconds waiting for a folder lock to be released"--is that likely on the server end or my end?

The messages are already downloaded so that would be with your mail client.

I'm with his host and have been trying to help him with this for a while. I even added his email account to my latest version of thunderbird (with the same pop settings ) for a couple days and was unable to reproduce the problem. I also looked through the maillogs on the server and only found the delay with his account.

Here's his latest logs, both showing delays-

Nov 6 15:26:33 s60 dovecot: pop3-login: Login: user=<Customers@EmailAddress>, method=PLAIN, mpid=24187, session=<m1ArD+UjHgAYDmPK>
Nov 6 15:26:45 s60 dovecot: pop3(Customers@EmailAddress): Connection closed top=0/0, retr=1/31881, del=0/60, size=1599891, bytes=27/33897

Nov 6 15:35:23 s60 dovecot: pop3-login: Login: user=<Customers@EmailAddress>, method=PLAIN, mpid=29301, session=<ZpnCLuUjtAAYDmPK>
Nov 6 15:35:36 s60 dovecot: pop3(Customers@EmailAddress): Disconnected: Logged out top=0/0, retr=4/78764, del=0/61, size=1621474, bytes=60/80840

Let me know if there's anything I can do to help?

eggdoc:

Since 1brent1 can't reproduce the problem using your account, the same version of Thunderbird, and the same operating system that makes me suspect some other software that you installed might be causing the problem. Try uninstalling Norton anti-virus, not just disabling it and see if that has any effect. Some anti-virus software still has side effects when disabled. If that doesn't help I suggest you try running Thunderbird after booting in "safe mode with networking" to see if its due to other software.

Note that to uninstall Norton anti-virus you must use the uninstall utility from the Symantec site. Using the standard Windows uninstall process leaves bits and pieces of Norton still functioning, resulting in still more problems.

Thanks. There was no delay in downloading messages when I removed Norton using the Norton removal tool. I contacted norton support on saturday who was not able to fix the issue, even when he remotely workly on my computer. He tried to tell me this was normal, but I indicated that I have used thunderbird and norton for over a decade without this issue. I asked to be bumped up and said I would get a call in 24 hours.

Meanwhile, I read the literature on Norton Security on delayed messages and purchased the 2016 version in hope that would return things to normal, but it did not. The literature rec turning off smart firewall (I have windows firewall running), but that allowed my test emails from my isp server to download ok, but not regular non test emails.

Evem though I turned off norton smart firewall permanently, there were 2 items that I could still turn off under smart email, stealth blocked ports and stateful protocol filter (they are explained here in easy to read table grid... https://support.norton.com/sp/en/us/hom ... 2014_en_us).

I am assuming this is ok since I am running windows firewall??? I will need to wait a day or so to get a call back from norton (or I will call them) and see if all my emails now come through without a delay.

the above solution did not work... but what has worked is excluding the thunderbird folder from real time protection... I will leave it that way and wait for Norton support to fix... thanks for all your help
