It's mostly finding a new home for infrastructure
if and when Mozilla kicks out everything from their repositories that isn't directly Firefox. No more challenging question is to which extent the current Gecko and its core components (specifically XPCOM, XUL, XBL, add-on system, etc.) can be maintained by Thunderbird and other interested parties (including SeaMonkey and Lightning) if Mozilla follows done their intended path to essentially strip Gecko from all of those basic features.

Google should buy out Thunderbird or Microsoft
I definitely don't want to see Google taking over
any Gecko application (and I don't see them being interested, but one never knows what Google is up to for whatever reason). Microsoft is a direct competitor with their proprietary Outlook, thus other than silencing unwelcome competition, I don't see them as a potential collaborator either.
