Error: Program must close to allow a previous installation..

Post by Djmfalk »

I had previously downloaded and installed Firefox 1.0.1. Tonight, I downloaded Firefox 1.0.2 and did not let it restart my computer because I was in the process of downloading a 65 MB file (Open Office). I have not tried to install Open Office yet.

Now when I try to open Firefox, I get the following error message:

"The program must close to allow a previous installation attempt to complete. Please restart."

I have rebooted several times, but still get the error message.

I am running Windows XP.

Thanks for your help with this.

Go to the program installation folder 'C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox' and delete the 'xpicleanup.exe' file. Make sure Firefox is not running when you do this. You should be able to start Firefox after that.

The file was called 'xpicleanup.dat', but when I deleted it, Firefox started.

Thanks for your help.

That sounds like a firewall issue to me. Make sure you have set your firewall to allow Firefox access to the internet.

Swami - Is this what the "Clean Up" button does in Tools>Downloads? I've never dared touch that thing, because I don't know what it does.

The clean-up button allows you to erase the list of previously downloaded items still listed in Tools>Downloads. You can also erase them one at a time by right clicking.
