Firefox 46 dropping support for Mac OS 10.6 10.7 10.8

This is notice of an intent to deprecate support within Firefox for the
following old versions of MacOS: 10.6, 10.7, and 10.8

The motivation for this change is that we have continued failures that
are specific to these old operating systems and don't have the resources
on engineering teams to prioritize these bugs. Especially with the
deployment of e10s we're seeing intermittent and permanently failures on
MacOS 10.6 that we are not seeing elsewhere. We get very little testing
of old MacOS versions from our prerelease testers and cannot dedicate
much paid staff testing support to these platforms. We also have an
increasingly fragile set of old hardware that supports automated tests
on 10.6 and do not intend to replace this.

This will affect approximately 1.2% of our current release population.
Here are the specific breakdowns by OS version:
10.6 0.66%
10.7 0.38%
10.8 0.18%

The final time frame for this deprecation has not been finalized, but the
current proposal is to remove support in Firefox 46. We will try and
update existing users on old MacOS versions to the Firefox 45 ESR
release stream, so that they stay with security update support through
the end of 2016.

46 release is working fine for me on 10.6.8, which is what I'm posting this from. Make of that what you will.

Hello,

I am on Disability with No End In Sight.

With help, I ended up with a model "iMac6,1" depicted here:
[ http://www.everymac.com/systems/apple/i ... specs.html ]
Bought it 'new' at a local CompUSA store, since we did not have any Apple® stores here at the time.
(Now, CompUSA is closed, of course.)

That is the only computer I have.
Can't afford anything else.

Yes it's old, and severely limited.
(biggest limitation is its EFI/BIOS at 32-bit, even tho its Core2Duo CPU is capable of 64-bit and runs most OSX tasks in that mode)
(this is related to how the original MacPro towers were designed)

But it's been a good companion all these years.
And it STILL WORKS.

I need the large screen, and its matte finish.

My paid job was doing technical work in a mainframe shop, with private wired network across the state, before Internet even.

A secondary job at the same agency was to try building a FreeBSD desktop system using their antiquated PCs (ended up with ca. 500-MHz PentiumII tower, even tho the agency was already able to afford much-better PCs for people that 'counted' ).

During these years, I've become rather critical of the times we are in now.

Seems the internet-software market has become too dependent on "luxury".

For example, I need simple suitable representation of the texts and pictures on a webpage.
We already have "standards" to dictate what that entails,
and we already have suitable software to draw them on our screens.

Same thing about using Thunderbird for email.

Another example:
I do not need e.g. "e10s"
and have instructed FireFox to shut off that option here
even if this iMac and o.s. can do multitasking.

Yet another example:
Ordering food and paying bills, etc, need Protections via encryption etc.
So far, I've been able to compile various F/OSS projects that are needed to do this.
Codes that are 'newer' than provided by Apple®.

This gave me a notion I've had throughout all this:
Data is Data,
and their processing does not necessarily need a new o.s.,
just updated code to be run by the user.
And Thus I blame Apple® for directly causing me Maximum Grief here
and secondarily blaming the F/OSS entities for dropping us poor people
since now I must be worried about it
and write these complaints in public arenas.

Also I need to mention that I've been testing the Nightly Builds and also the tinderbox builds here
and opened several bugzilla tickets over the recent years.

There's more to it
but I hope I've explained enough for now.

Thank you.

That's a nice story, but there's a catch.

When Apple decides to NOT support software, they cut it off like a diseased limb. This isn't like Microsoft with an extended support system. Its unfortunate that he uses it as a production hub, but he should really think about using a flavor of Linux. Linux video production software has come an extremely long way thanks to OSS projects and Hollywood software outfits and there are updated 32-bit flavors.

This change has gone in on v49.

Disable Firefox on MacOS <10.9
Bug 1255588

Firefox should work on the older Macs up through v48, and any 48-point releases, and all the 45esr releases.

i am still here

and still foaming about this issue

v48's stated support platform has already killed 10.6-thru-10.8

what is a person with disability suppose to do
when stuck with a dilapidated machine
and unable to afford a proper new one

being able to pay bills
with the "monthly allotment"
and order via snailmail many things needed for daily life
esp'ly food
but being 'controlled' by a F/OSS entity
(forget The-Fruits™ on this)
is why i am still foaming about this

SSL is paramount requirement to do money-things, see

an idea about getting a Gov'm't Grant
has popped up
but once again
who is going to HELP ME do that

and so far
i can see no help on the third-party project called "TenSixFox"
either

most linux flavors have not worked properly on this machine,
but i still have ubuntu and maybe linux-mint to test

i am not someone who'd "commit harry-carry"
but i can see why some peeps would consider doing that.
but still, it's that important.
i _require_ a machine that can remain powered-up 24/7/365 (with UPS which i have) for a variety of timed-tasks (mainly in the old-style 'crontab'),
yet would _really-like_ a desktop-tower running a suitable *ix flavor
(i had such expertise in my main paid job)
so i've been hoping to get funds for this machine:
which would need appropriate display-monitor too

yes that means jumping off this fruity™ ship for good
and i hope to be prepared to do just that
if i can ever afford these

how the dikkens to do that, tho

It is Firefox 49.0 that has OSX 10.6, 10.7, 10.8 support dropped and not 48.0 as stated in thread a couple times.

You also have the 45.0 ESR channel to get security updates. The version on ESR channel gets eight updates (unless Mozilla extends it) so when Firefox 53.0 is Released the 45.8.0 ESR will be.
