Impact of B2G demise and Mozilla focus on core competencies

Post by Richard Maher »

As Mozilla continues to sharpen its focus on development around its Firefox browser, is it not only a matter of time before the Mozilla Push-Service is deprioritized and/or sold?

Should efforts now be focused on getting FireFox to work with GCM, WNS, APNs, and AWS etc? With autopush https://mozilla-push-service.readthedoc ... sh-service already lagging way behind industry-standard and industry-strength offerings from established Cloud Service Providers can you please concentrate on exposing all available Push Features into the UI?

For example: -
Broadcasting
Topic-Based subscriptions
Globalization/Localization
Collapse_Key
Priority
TTL

Surely, the good news is that you no longer have to re-invent the wheel and can focus on continuing to improve that great core product FireFox?

FWIW
mozillaZine is an independent Mozilla community and advocacy site. We're not affiliated or endorsed by the Mozilla Corporation but we love them just the same.

I can't keep up anymore.

Didn't Web Push arrive in Firefox 44.0 on the desktop? Web Push Arrives in Firefox 44 ★ Mozilla Hacks – the Web developer blog

I have yet to see a site push anything. :-k
Linux Desktop - AMD Athlon(tm) II X3 455 3.3GHz | 8.0GB RAM | GeForce GT 630
Windows Notebook - AMD A8 7410 2.2GHz | 6.0GB RAM | AMD Radeon R5

@WLS The most common reason for you haven't seen a site push anything yet is the absence of server infrastructure libraries. In particular for C# and JAVA. Hand-rolling the code involved to comply with the emerging standard with encryption etc is not a trivial task. The current examples provided deal with Javascript on the server NODE.js or cURL.

I expect to see Microsoft, Oracle, and the P in LAMP providers busily working on solutions.

In the meantime the Web-Push protocol is being dumbed-down to meet the inadequacies of Mozilla's Autopush effort

I sincerely hope that with Mozilla now focusing on the great browser we all know and love that they will once again partner with the likes of Google, Amazon, Microsoft and Apple and give us a better way to select Push Service Provider than the current about:config wss://push.services.mozilla.com/

Mozilla does not provide a Web-Server or a Search Engine and should not be in the business of providing a Push Notification Service. Firefox forever!

Given http://gizmodo.com/former-facebook-work ... 1775461006 I suppose it's hardly surprising that the following answer was censored from http://stackoverflow.com/questions/3523 ... 6#37128616

I like you (and everyone else in the world outside W3C/IETF) want/need to do this. The only reason it is/will not possible is the web-push specification is being deliberately dumbed down by Mozilla employees to cater the deficiencies of the hubris of their second rate poorly performing cloud notification service: - http://mozilla-push-service.readthedocs ... dge=latest

For some unknown reason the spec writers insist on maintaining the misconception that TOPICS are COLLAPSE_KEYS :-(

I have written to Mozilla management and community forums urging them to abandon their vanity of an effort: - http://forums.mozillazine.org/viewtopic ... &t=3003779

Hopefully we can then get some GCM input into the spec and enjoy this essential functionality
