Me neither but it looks like there's feverish activity going on.

I would find it highly amusing if it was related to this..

Firefox Hello removed in 49+

Post by mamooth »

The code is in. As of v49, Firefox Hello will no longer be included in new installs. It will be available as a regular add-on.

https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1287827

Being Hello was a 'system add-on', I'm not sure how it will work when one updates a Firefox installation that already has Hello.

Sadly, no word on getting rid of Pocket.

Er yes...
The question is WHY are they removing it.. and why the frantic rush to have it gone by Aug 1.
Smells fishy to me...

August 2nd is when Fx48 ships. They have to beat the trains if they want it out quickly.

Since Hello was likely removed due to low popularity among Firefox users I wonder if it is possible to introduce a new Firefox feature in such a way so that the major part of the user base became interested in it?
Sorry for my poor English.

Since when did Mozilla care about that !? :-k
More likely something to do with this.

So they are for unknown reasons finally getting rid of this service that none asked for (among the other unwelcome burdens such as Pocket and the likes), but something way worse (I'd say truly scary) is cooking behind the scenes:

https://wiki.mozilla.org/Context_Graph

Mozilla is building Context Graph, a ‘recommender system for the web’ .

Scary.

Is that why after updating to Fx48 it's still shown in Troubleshooting Information/Extensions and 'loop @mozilla.org.xpi' is still in Fx Program files?

They never indicated it was going to be removed in Firefox 48.0, the bug states 49.0.
Requirements:
- Remove Firefox Hello from Aurora 50 and Nightly 51
- Remove Firefox Hello from Firefox in Beta 49 no later than August 1st
Linux Desktop - AMD Athlon(tm) II X3 455 3.3GHz | 8.0GB RAM | GeForce GT 630
Windows Notebook - AMD A8 7410 2.2GHz | 6.0GB RAM | AMD Radeon R5
