Salamander is a good name idea.
I like Hermes too (he was the messenger of the other gods, fast as hell with his winged feet :)

I saw there http://www.hermograph.com/science/mercury2.htm that Hermes is also known as Wodan, Alipes, Thoth, Gud, and Nabu.

Color me irked.

A slightly different mythological suggestion:

Peryton - a winged deer nobody has the name at all

a whole slew of possibilities: http://www.eaudrey.com/myth/alphabetical_index.htm

What's the name of that lizard that runs so fast that it can run over water?

The lizards that run on water are generally called "Jesus Christ lizards" with Basiliscus basiliscus as the scientific name, which would be a better trademark.

Just because stones have rolled for millennia doesn't mean you can expect to call the browser Rolling Stone.

But then again Rolling Stones aren't a mythological legend in western culture in common usage.

Isn't salamander already a gecko based browser?

Donno, didn't see anything about it on mozilla.org or mozdev and nothing poped up on on the first page of a Google search.

www.salamander.com seems avalable too

Salamander Web Browser

Does turn out to be a browser. We plan on hijacking the name? I prefer salamander myself.

Salamander is already taken and is actually a browser based on the Gecko engine.

I like that. I bet it's copyrighted somewhere though. If not, that is a very good name suggestion. Based on the Mozilla lizard/gecko engine, fast and small. That's what a raptor was (well not based on the gecko engine, but fast and relatively small).

I see no reason to contact them, are they going to force the city of Phoenix to change it's name?

Auch :(

Strange this didn't turn up anywhere on mozdev nor mozilla.org :/

Guess someone could mail and ask if he would like to let go of the name, but hijacking it sertainly seems wrong.

IANAL. In the case of a trademark they can only apply the trademark for a limited market.
They cannot pursue for trademark infringement if the two product/companies/whatever
are in completely different market.

Them being an embeded technology company I am not sure they can go for a trademark
infringement on a browser.

For example (I am not sure that one is not an urban legend but it makes the point) there
is an underwear company called microsoft and the other microsoft can do nothing about it.
The markets are too different to make a claim or cause confusion in products.

I live a few miles from Phoenix OR and since they've been around longer than that BS dot com, I should instigate a lawsuit as the dot com is infringing on at least two city name/trademarks.

This country despartly needs tort reform as the courts are choking on their own instestinal contents due to the malice and frivolousness of the current civil legal system.

I'm keeping the Phoenix browser name on my system.
8) Windows: XPproSP2
8) Gentoo & Overclockix Live CD
8) Latest Firefox of course
