Adblock Plus to Open Acceptable Ads Marketplace This Year

Post by Ngamer01 »

I happened to have noticed this today. Apparently in future ABP updates, the devs can set it so that blocked ads on a page will be replaced with ABP's acceptable ads. There is no word if users will be able to opt-out of this program since most users use adblock not only as a security measure, but to deal with webpages that have ads that are annoying and slow down loading of the sites they want to access (drains mobile data / data plans too!).

Any thoughts on this? The marketplace is now in beta with a full release (and planned ABP update) due later this year.

So Eyeo GmbH (the company behind ABP) is partnering with an ad network in order to make the acceptable ads whitelisting process easier for sites. That's what the link in your post is about.

Hard to believe that in the five years or so this program has been around that no one would have even mentioned something as basic as that, don't you think?

That's for the original version of acceptible ads. I was speaking about the marketplace that's now in beta. Acceptible Ads 2.0 if you will. I didn't see any info if they would make the marketplace mandatory for all or if they would continue to let users opt-out in this future update.

This is linked near the bottom of Eyeo's FAQ about this new service: https://adblockplus.org/forum/viewtopic ... 12&t=45876

For comparison: https://adblockplus.org/forum/viewtopic.php?f=12&t=9851 (also note the dates of those posts)

If that's not clear enough, let me put this a different way. As far as I can see, as a user of uBlock Origin, I could opt in to this right now if desired, and I'd have exactly the same experience as users of Adblock Plus who didn't opt out.

What else do you think there is to it?

You're welcome :D

Out of curiosity, is anything known yet about the privacy policy behind these acceptable ads?

There was this in the Register this morning Adblock market for unblocked ads
Maybe this on the privacy Privacy policy
There also appears to be another site which shows a privacy policy but from October 2015.

Thanks, I saw that but would assume this is likely different given the ABP guys' take on ads and analytics.
I'm also not clear whether Eyeo or Combotag is operating the servers.

This one Privacy policy but it might be for just Adclock or some satellite site.

Yep, that's for AdBlock which is something else entirely.

Code: Select all

acceptable ads
Define "acceptable"! As a user I should be able to define what is acceptable for me to see!

Well, just don't use the Acceptable Ads subscription then. It's not that hard to make your own "Acceptable Ads" whitelist.

^ @barbaz

OK, I realize there are while/black lists, I was being sarcastic really, and I apologize that it didn’t come across that way.

The I idea of an "ad blocker" is to block ads because they are not acceptable. IMHO.

However an ad about a new cereal would be more acceptable than some 'adult XXX rated blah blah" type ad.
Or I should say: for me, who knows what others would "accept"

BTW and OT: I use uBlock Origin

Just uncheck the box where it reads, "Allow some non-intrusive advertising".

I still use ABP because I like the extensions for it like the Element Hiding Helper and the Webmail Ad Blocker along with the filter subscriptions.
