I think I have found a bug here.
Thunderbird 45.4
Mac OSX 10.11.6 (15G1108)
Steps:
Launch Thunderbird
Get Write Message Window
Maximize Write Message Window
Quit Write Message Window
The entire screen goes black.
Placing the cursor top gets the Mac OS Title Bar. Then you can quit Thunderbird and all comes back normally - except, on relaunch Thunderbird, the Write Message Window is too large even when not maximized and has to be resized to previous dimensions.
This happens to me without any skins or add-on activated.
Also, I deactivated hardware acceleration and it didn't help.
