Which Firefox for Android phone?

Post by healer »

When I search Play Store (Google Play) I see two Firefox apps.

They are Firefox Browser fast & private ... 4.4 and Firefox for Android Beta 4.3.

I have the former installed and been using it for some time. So I am sure that is for Android phone too.

So what is the difference? Which one I should be using?

The 4.4 and 4.3 is the average review ratings.

The Release is 50.1.0 and Beta is currently at 51.0.b7 like the desktop Firefox.

You can also do manual install of apk from
https://www.mozilla.org/firefox/android/all/
https://www.mozilla.org/firefox/android/beta/all/

I do not know why the Firefox versions are not put on those Google Play pages as you are not the first to mistake the average review ratings as Firefox versions.

Sorry I don't quite follow what you say.

Which one I should use for my Android phone?

The web page you give seems to be for the desktop Firefox.

All four of the links I posted were about the Android Firefox version as the word "android" in links shows, nothing about the desktop Firefox.

The Firefox you refer to as 4.4 is the Release (Firefox 50.1.0) while the one you refer to as 4.3 is the Beta (currently at version 51.0b7).

You will likely want the Release since there is not normally any updates in between the major Releases unless there was a chemspill update for something that could not wait for next Release. The Beta channel gets say six to twelve Beta builds of a version on channel in Testing. The b7 on 51.0b7 for example means it is the seventh Beta build of 51.0.

There are four main development channels.

Release < Beta (b#) < Aurora (aka developers edition) (a2) < Nightly (a1)

On this page the Release is on left then Beta then Aurora.

I do not recommend trying the Aurora builds (Nightly is same) as they are more unstable and get patches almost everyday.

Thanks!
It sounds like I have the right one.
How to check the version number of the app?
I have tried Settings - Mozilla Firefox - About Firefox, but I can't see it.
