My "NBN" FTTN modem keeps dropping out.[No floods involved.]

Post by LIMPET235 »

Hi guys 'n' gal,

The back ground...

On December 15th last year I decided to "upgrade" to the NBN, Fibre To The Node, (FTTN).

Since doing so, it's been an absolute nightmare.
I've had about 500 drop outs at various times during the day &/or night.
The D/L speed can vary between 1400 KB/s to 27 KB/s.....Uploads are fairly constant at ~115 KB/s.

They usually occur every 15 Mins....give or take a Min or so.

The "Fix/es"...

After contacting OPTUS, they sent me a 2nd modem. This did not rectify the problem.
They sent 2 techs out who checked the old copper phone line & said..."No Probs."

Well, it kept dropping out. More feedback to OPTUS.

They contacted the NBN Co. & they sent 2 techs out....checked all & said..."No Probs."

Kept dropping out. More feedback to OPTUS.

The NBN Co. sent another tech out & he checked & repaired all the "connections in the numerous pits", tested the line & said..."No Probs."
(NB: All our telephone cables are underground & are terminated in these pits.)

He set the modem up next to the "wall socket" & we checked it for about 50 Mins.
No drop outs observed.
He left at 5.15 PM after being on-site for 5 Hrs.....but the modem dropped out once more at 6.00 PM.

More feedback to OPTUS. (I think I now know just about all the operators in India.) ;)

Thing is though that the other night I had no drop outs, then last night, 18th to 19th, I had over 20 in 5 Hrs.

More feedback to OPTUS.

My dossier must be getting rather long by now. :)

The problem with all this, is that I give feedback to OPTUS.....they give feedback to NBN Co. ....but I/we do NOT receive any
feedback from them.

Does anyone have any idea on "Why It Is So?"

It should work "out-of-the-box" coz The Government said so. ;)

Apologies for the long post.

Thanks muchly..

So does Optus have their own lines or are they accessing Telstra infrastructure? Even if they do have their own lines they are at least 20 to 30 odd years old, Telstra lines could be way way older than that. It was always going to be the problem with fibre to the node after the node you have ancient copper lines. Sounds like congestion though keep nagging is my only suggestion. Satellite became a nightmare of drop-outs and slow speeds. Fibre to the house here :-"

the NBN is a complete utter mess under the Turnbull Governmentr . it wont be completely rolled out by 2020 . i was supposed to get it 2H of 2017, no such luck, now there saying between June an December 2018, i'll believe that when i see it. ( i wont be holding my breqathe ) people might start to think, Kevin Rudds NBN isnt/wasnt such a bad idea, sure it might cost more but at the end of the day , least it would be all one complete Network an not a silly Mix . i always wondered why Good Ole Johnny Howard didnt Roll out that Thick Black Cable everywhere, it would have made sense to do so, but thats the libs for ya.

im pretty sure OPTUS Rents or whatever there share of the Netweork from Telstra. as its all Telstra's Network , same with Mobile

wasnt the Turnbull's NBN supposed to cost $40 Bill ? $15 Billion later an what do we have? not a hell of a lot

just as well i didnt vote for the idiot

Thanks for the replies, malliz, Arch...

Optus use the original Telstra copper that may be over 40 years of age.
(I've been in residence here for just coming up on 30 years.)

I can understand the reference to congestion, malliz, but why the "timed" drop outs every 15 damn minutes?
The fibre is capable of transmitting terrabytes of data & there aren't that many houses in the area of "The Node", (a Telstra pillar),
which is just 800 odd metres away.

Plus, as I mentioned, you can't get any kind of feedback from the NBN Co. & you apparently cannot contact them.
They are like "gods" who control all 'n sundry.

Will keep plugging away until I get a decent result.

Ta muchly.

You could always do a Google for NBN Co. Corporate management personnel and mail them a letter.
Quite a list.

Hi Grumps,
Thing is though, that from their site, there's a Contact link but it's under the "Corporate" section.

I tried it but all I got was a "pop up log in" box for my modem & nothing else.....Really?

Truly weird...

Will wait for Optus to respond.

[edit]
The modem was turned on at around 11.00 AM Friday, 20th & had quite a few drop outs during the afternoon.
I fired up the comp at about 12.00 midnight because I am sick of all those drop outs.
I've had NO drop outs all night.

Now, is that weird or what?

I am now shutting down at just after 4.10 AM, Saturday, 21st.

Since it occurs mostly during business hours it could be extreme business users glomming the bandwidth.

One of the quietest periods for net use in Aus. When I had satellite 3.30pm till midnight during a school week were the most congested times the ISP I was with even throttled torrents and downloads till midnight. Also 8.30am till 10.00am (all those office workers checking their Facebook, email et'c.) If its a regular as clockwork dropout sounds like something at the Optus/NBN end like an over zealous load balancer. Yeh you would be better off sending a letter to your local MP than trying to get the gods at the NBN to answer even the ISP's don't have that luxury.

Hi guys,

For The Grump...
Nope. They occur at all hours of the day or night.
(I keep paper records of all the activity & I have a free program that
monitors the connection & records it in a text file.)
It's just that I do not have the modem powered up all the time.
I run tests with only it turned on....No computer on, so no activity from it or the phone.

For malliz...
As I mentioned, the times vary considerably & the drop outs are not consistent, except for when it gets into that
damned 15 Min cycle.
Sometimes they will stop at "certain" hours, others just continue all day/night.
Thanks for the suggestion re; Whirlpool but I've tried that site numerous times & come up with nothing rel; to my area.
Way too many old posts there & too tech for me.

I have a 4 + Minute video of the modem when the drop out occurs on my mediafire site
& am just waiting to see if OPTUS techs want it, along with any other records I have.

&...It's the weekend, so will not expect any more from Optus until Monday.

Here's a cut down example of the drops from the "Internet Connection" program...
(It's very sensitive.....apparently, coz all the short/miniscule drops do not affect the modem. Might be classified as a "warning of impending doom.")

Do you have any way to view the electrical current during the times this goes up and down?
I'm thinking a high limit low limit cut-off or a break in power supply.
Then again it could be the local fauna wrestling on the cables.
Wish I could be more help. :-k

Thanks for the suggestion, Grumps.
Just to fill in some "left-out" info.....I run a 350 Watt UPS, (as in my Sig), so really, no probs with the 240 Volt supply.
I think the only "vermin" that are causing it are called "NBN Co." :)

Update for today...
Modem on at about 11.00 AM but not monitored all day.
It started it's "15 Min routine" at 3.55 PM & continued till 5.58 PM. Nothing seen afterwards.
Comp on at 8.55 PM & started to drop out at 9.00 PM, 9.15, 9.30, 9.45 & now at 10.01....
Makes for interesting moderating.

Did I mention that on Friday & Saturday I had no drop outs at all.

Neighbors on Holiday???

Reference to voltage drop was not on your UPS/computer side but provider's system side.
Old pairs depended on electric source from the system/phone company. (ringer equivalent was a factor most systems asked for, may still be on the bottom of phones)
Many of the Fios systems require electric from the home owner to their hardware and the merging of the two may be where the issue is.
Some of my phones on the copper pair system don't always ring due to power drop on copper side of system due to Fios implementation on phone system.
Also some of the Fios systems have a battery backup, less than wonderful, which is supposed to take up the slack during power outages and the diminishing power on copper pair systems.
In other words, you get charged more for the connection but also now pay for the electric as well, supplied to the battery backup which when it runs out of power during outages, the phone goes down. One of the main reasons for maintaining a copper pair, particularly for the aged and infirmed, is the copper pair systems work during outages.

It may also relate to new installations between your location and the nearest phone company's power supply.
Old underground cables seem to make sense if there's rain, irrigations or some form of short impeding the signal.

Hi Grump,
re; the telephone system & how it's (used to be), powered.

The original "land line" was powered by/from Telstra, as they were/are their copper wires.
These are terminated in concrete pits in the ground & are subject to water ingress from any source.
But....It was always available.
The various ISP's just rent the copper wires.

With the new NBN Co. system, they still use those wires but now the original land line now uses VOIP over the NBN system.
Hence, when the modem drop out, so does the phone.
(The only way to contact anyone is to use a mobile, provided that you have one, or by carrier pigeon or smoke signals.)

NB: I don't know what Fios is, but I'm pretty sure that we don't use it here.
There was nothing extra required by the user to run the original phone system.

& No. No neighbours to speak of that use the WWW.
I'm a "permanent" resident with a few "weekenders" around, but they've all gone bye byes now.

Today's report...
Modem on at 10.00 AM.
Did not monitor until 3.45 PM.
Drop out at 3.55, 15 Min drops right up till 5.58 PM.
Stopped watching, coz nothing happened. ;)

Comp on at 8.55 PM.
Drop at 9.00 PM on the dot & continued every 15 Mins, give or take a Min, till 10.50 PM.

It's now nearly 1.00 AM Monday & it's been rock solid since ^, then.

Damned annoying!

Apparently you are a fiber to node system which mean Fios (fiber optic system) to what ever cable or pair they are running at the node).
Is there any way you can determine the power management at play for your modem at any one time? System or on board local both active?
Is your connection set to "ignore" ipv6 and do you have your connection set for "All users may connect . . ." or something similar in your configuration?
If the all users are allowed can you stop that and leave it as one connection?

Power management can be a real pain if two systems are competing for the same device or are instructing the device at different times.

Yes. I am definitely using FTTN, as I mentioned.

which is just 800 odd metres away."

This pillar is situated on the side of the road, as are all of them. Some have a large pit adjacent as well. This makes for easy access for the "techs."
I do not have access to ipv6 here, as yet & it's disabled in the modem & my "local area connection" shortcut.
(I created a shortcut on the desk top to either enable or disable the connection to the modem.
In other words, I can turn the modem on but the computer is not connected to the WWW, yet.
I can then hit the shortcut & connect to the modem & the WWW.)
I hope that explains things a tad better. :)

This system has been faultless for years.

As I mentioned, the modem can just go into it's "drop out" cycle irrespective of whether the computer is turned on & connected to it or not.

re; The power management to the modem?
It's a 240 Volt to 12 Volt plug pack (I believe you refer to them as, wall warts, (a terrible name)) & it gets it's 240 Volts from the UPS, along with the PC & monitor.
No way that I can see to monitor it's power or any fluctuations there-in.
There should not/will not be any due to the UPS.

Optus called earlier today & said that they are going to update the info to the NBN Co. re; my problem.
Big bloody deal.
I had to wait all weekend for that?

Once more, we wait 'n' see.

Thanks again guys.
