PulseAudio
I just read the sad news. I keep my boxes lean and clean, PulseAudio is a parasite layer and there is no way I'm going to install it. Darn, after all these years it is time to say goodbye Firefox.

Re: PulseAudio
I see you spammed Bug 1247056 in which your comment 176 was hidden. Bugzilla Etiquette
It is not required just yet as said in comment 178
Note in case it is not obvious to you, the mozillaZine site is not a part of nor run by Mozilla as comment on right sidebar shows also. Mozilla has their own support forum at support.mozilla.org/questions/

ALSA support is dropped from Firefox 52 onward.

Re: PulseAudio
I guess I'm guilty in all counts. Sorry. I'm really not a programmer, it will be interesting challenge for me to clean up the pulseaudio calls from code. If it is necessary ... I think there are people who will do it better than I can do.

Re: PulseAudio
A number of changes have been held till Firefox 53.0 or later as the next major version ESR will be based on is Firefox 52.0. The Fx 52.0 ESR will be useful for those using WinXP/Vista and want Plugins support for example. Maybe they could hold off still.

Re: PulseAudio
I just wanted to start a thread as well about this.
I just upgraded from .. firefox 0.47 or something like that, may also be 0.50 I think.
Anyway, now I am on 0.52 and I have no xx sound.
I am sorry but what the xx is going on here? Who is making these decisions that
from one upgrade to another, I suddenly have no sound?
What the xx is wrong with these people?
have added it to my firefox-file where I keep configure options for compilation.
I will do so eventually.
But right now... I am angry.
Right now I am using opera. And videos in the browser work fine.
And the older firefox version was fine too.
WHO is making these decisions?
I do not get it. There was absolutely no reason to mandate pulseaudio for everyone
all of a sudden. What for? WHY? Why do I need pulseaudio? Firefox is the SINGLE
application that requires it now!
At the least you guys could have provided an option, or an extended option, like
in a linux subtab, for people to simply select which layer they wish to use -
oldschool alsa, which is superior, or the systemd-xx that is pulseaudio. That
way, we could pick at runtime what we want to use, rather than BE FORCED
TO THE ONLY ONE TRUE WAY just because some random mozilla dev
decided this for EVERYONE DOWN THE PIPELINE.
which is xx. I remember that there were a lot of people in the past that helped
me too here. The forum here is great.
What I am wondering is whether mozilla is slowly losing its mind, for no obvious
reason to me.

Actually, I am somewhat more practical. While the systemd virus is annoying to no
ends, from a practical point of view, I am fine to use it too. I mean, I am not
actually using it since it is useless xx, but - I can use it from a practical point
of view IF I can then use software xyz or abc (not that I think that it SHOULD
be necessary that the systemd virus keeps on leaking into the linux ecosystem
but ask red hat why it sabotages linux as a whole).
I also compile 95% from source, the exception being when I don't have the time
or, more commonly so, when it really is a big software suite. Like qt 5, which
also keeps on growing and growing and growing, and kde keeps on growing and
growing and growing. Anyway, firefox/mozilla of course is not responsible for
qt or kde and so forth.
My BIG problem and gripe here in regarsd to pulseaudio is that I DO NOT NEED
IT. I DO NOT USE IT. In fact, I have not even compiled it right now!
So now the mozilla team forces me to EITHER:
- Compile pulseaudio MERELY SO I COULD xxx LISTEN TO AUDIO
AGAIN WHEN IT WORKED PERFECTLY WELL IN PRIOR VERSIONS
OF FIREFOX.
or
- Compile firefox from source, which will take a few hours ... time which I simply
do not WANT to have to invest. I mean, I'll eventually get around to it and compile
it, and have the option --disable-pulseaudio permanently on (until some mozilla
developer will remove it again)
But in either way, the OLD way where I just downloaded the binary from mozilla
because I am lazy (I admit that I am lazy), no longer works for me right now.
So the mozilla team is forcing me to add more time for something that used to
work just fine.
I am pissed.
PS: On the other hand, I am using opera right now to play videos in the browser
but it kind of feels bad, since now I am here sorta falling to the dark side of
chromium and what not... and that other browser, vivaldi.
I do not understand mozilla, are they sabotaging their own products now to xx
off ancient users? Looks to me like that with such idiotic decisions...
PSS: I actually also only upgraded firefox because there was a popup that recommended
it, and since I thought the new firefox version might be better, then this would be
ok. Ok... so first imrpession NO xxx SOUND.
Well done mozilla!
Keep doing this AWESOME work. Some Google drone must be sitting in your dev team
because otherwise, it simply can not be explained.

Ok, that is a viable workaround. Thanks for that comment, that was useful, I> Compile firefox yourself with --disable-pulseaudio --enable-alsa
