I think I may be on to something for the support team to look into... I signed on directly to Outlook and now they split their Inbox to "Focused" and "Other" which is a real pain!
This might be contributing to the issues everyone is having with TB and Outlook. Boy I had a lot of Junk mail that I can't get to open or loaded today.

I doubt that's involved in these issues as it seems to just be a filter on the server side.

I have an old MS hotmail account via IMAP. It has been slow for more than just a few years now, although all messages do get through. Changing the service to POP via Thunderbird misses the vast majority of emails. My other email accounts relate to Yahoo and Google which I believe work ok with both POP and IMAP. IMAP doesn't miss emails but POP is still faster so I stick with that. I have never tried any alternative programs to Thunderbird on Windows or Linux, but I might in future. I suspect there won't be a big difference

Thunderbird is "missing emails" because of the way the POP email protocol works. It gives the email client (Thunderbird) access only to the server inbox folder so Thunderbird can't see or download messages in the sent folder or any other than the inbox.

I have the same problem. It started recently. I'm using Thunderbird for Outlook/Hotmail (IMAP) email. Very slow. Often hangs on "Downloading Message". Endless notifications of "Connection to server [email address]@msn.com timed out", and "Server [email address]@msn.com has disconnected. The server may have gone down or there may be a network problem".

...Tried disabling antivirus and malware programs.
...Tried launching Win 10 in Safe Mode with Networking.
...Tried launching Thunderbird with add-ons disabled.
...Tried removing the email account completely from Thunderbird, including all profile info, and reloading/reconfiguring from scratch.
...I even had my service provider check my internet connection, and run a remote reboot on my modem. They say everything looks fine.

The problem remains, and:
...I have the latest updates and drivers on my system.
...I made no changes to my email settings prior to the issue occurring.
...The issue occurs on both my desktop and laptop.
...A different email account configured for IMAP (not Outlook /Hotmail) continues to work fine in Thunderbird.
...I can get email with no issues by logging on to Outlook.com via a browser. (I am told a different Microsoft server is accessed by third-party email programs.)

And here's the kicker: Things work fine late at night. It's only during the day, when the server is busy, that the issue occurs.

There is a bottleneck issue in whatever Microsoft server is being accessed by Thunderbird. (I live a few miles from Microsoft HQ in Redmond, WA.)

Microsoft needs to address this server issue immediately.

I agree with Doc Curtis - there is a bottleneck at MS. What is the best way to report this problem to MS? Is there a particular web portal or forum to use?

On the Hotmail/Outlook web page under the Gear icon there's a "Help" option and under that a "Feedback" item.

Dan,

Thanks. I just sent this:

"For several weeks now, people who use non-Microsoft email clients such as Thunderbird, Android K9, etc., with your Hotmail or Outlook.com accounts are having SEVERE issues.

There is a long thread in the Thunderbird support forum which describes exactly what is going wrong. We have concluded that the problem is most likely on your end, due to either a change you've made with the way your servers use the IMAP protocol, or more likely, it is a resource problem.

The thread is here:
http://forums.mozillazine.org/viewtopic ... #p14740528

We request that you please investigate this problem immediately as it is impacting many people.

Thank you"

Looks good. Thanks for letting us know of your feedback to MS. Now let's see if they offer any response.

An Outlook support specialist responded and asked what email client I'm using and to send a screen shot of a problem. I told him Thunderbird, and I sent a screen shot of outlook.com servers timing out. I also asked him again to read this thread.

Good. They are at least paying attention and, thus far, responding.

FYI, I tried contacting the Outlook support specialists.
The response:
"...it would be best that you reach out to the Thunderbird team for further investigation. I myself only manage the Outlook.com website and if there are errors occurring there it is best you reach out to them. I do hope you understand."

I can access my ancient tried-and-true Hotmail account just fine if I use my browser (Firefox 52.0.2) and go to Outlook.live.com. It is fast and smooth using the browser. I only have troubles when I try to access the Hotmail account through Thunderbird. So doesn't this mean that there's something amiss in Thunderbird?
