Performance and diagnosis tools?

Post by MozUserNorth »

I've been using Firefox for a long time, and even with the most recent version 53, I still don't understand why it can become so sluggish after opening many tabs. It gets frustrating when firefox starts freezing for couple seconds and the worst is that the about:performance doesn't show any sign of these issues - I see green across all the tabs.

I see this happening on two totally different systems, so I wouldn't link it to any addins. Anyway the most puzzling in my opinion is that I don't see any tools to help diagnose these issues and I don't see any progress in the most recent builds. Only reason I stick to FF is because of Keefox (which is the most perfect password manager) and also because I don't like the chrome user interface. Is there somekind of serious legacy code or what is happening here?

It's not enough to assume that extensions are not causing performance issues. It would take only one extension, common to both systems, to cause issues.

Have you tried starting Firefox in Mozilla Safe Mode? http://kb.mozillazine.org/Safe_mode
If no improvement using Safe Mode, do you have the same problem if you create a new profile and test it with no extensions or non-default themes installed?

So I don't even have one common extension on both systems... I use uBlock on one and ABP on another, but what bothers me more is that there doesn't seem to be any good way to identify performance issues. about:performance doesn't really show any of the non responsiveness...

Firefox's built-in Developer Tools has a Performance tab. It will present you with an astounding amount of information about what the browser is doing as you merrily browse along, millisecond by millisecond.
It would seem to require a pretty decent grasp of javascript and it's implementation to understand it all. So there ya go: get busy.

No AV...

Got the perf tool going and captured a trace after the system got sluggish

It looks like Firefox is doing an insane amount of GC after a while... it is x64 and is only claiming 1.8Gb of memory. What's next to help on this issue?

If I were you I'd create that new profile and test with it as-is... just to see what it does...
