What have you used to change the tab width and / or tab Font size... Maybe CTR ?

.
You either have an extension or a theme that is doing that.

Test in safe mode. On the menu bar, click the Help menu and select Restart with Add-ons Disabled.... Firefox will start up with the Firefox Safe Mode dialog. Click continue in Safe Mode and don't check any items.

However the font is much too large on the tab.

The font is much too large. Do the safe-mode test and let us know.

That is the way it is supposed to be as pointed out by therube in the FF53 release notes below.

The last few characters of shortened tab titles fade out instead of being replaced by ellipses to keep more of the title visible.

It isn't broken. "Fixing it" would likely require some code in userChrome.css or an add-on. Not worth the effort in my view.

Though I get less wording in my tabs compared to RobertJ' pic... (probably one of my extensions... no big deal) but sensitive ....you hardly show anything in that first post... looks like you've messed with some stuff.... so, you need to test it out in safe-mode as has been mentioned... and BTW ... my test profile with no tab related extensions or changes, displays much more of the title.
