How Do I Get Rid of Unified Inbox?

Post by BobbiH »

Currently I have a Unified Inbox, Due to changing circumstances I no longer want my email to be combined, but need to keep my two accounts separated. How do I get rid of the Unified Account which continues to display in the left pane and to show as a choice when I am moving mail from one folder to another? I can find no way to delete it, "Account Actions" doesn't give me a "Remove Account" choice -- only Add or Remove an account from WITHIN the Unified Mailbox. Any help gratefully appreciated.

See http://kb.mozillazine.org/Global_Inbox if you really meant you wanted to stop using a global inbox (which hides the POP accounts in the folder pane and uses "Local Folders" to store their mail instead). view -> folders -> unified is just a view, it doesn't effect how mail is actually stored. It is not designed to let you select which accounts are effected, its all or none.

I had actually found the View -> Folders -> All solution when I was trying to figure this out for myself. The problem is, it is SET to "All" but the Unified Account still displays. I really don't care where anything is stored; I'm just trying to get that third entry off the screen, both in the left hand list of accounts and as a possible selection when I right click on a message and then select "Move To....". In that case I would like to be given the choice of only the folders in each of the two accounts, but instead that third choice of the Unified Inbox is still given as selectable. Have I explained this any better? Is there any way I can just get rid of any reference to a Unified Account I no longer want?

http://kb.mozillazine.org/Toolbar_or_wi ... ot_working

First try safe mode (help -> restart with add-ons disabled) to eliminate any chance your problem is a side effect of some add-ons.

If that doesn't help try deleting the virtualfolders.dat file in the profile. It stores the saved search settings, which the unified view uses (along with some code to change the view). It can get corrupted. When you restart Thunderbird it should re-create it using default values.

If that doesn't help try deleting the foldertree.json and the xulstore.json file. The first file is used by the folder pane. The second stores the toolbar, window layout and size/position settings. When you restart Thunderbird both will be re-created using default values.

Tried rebooting into Safe Mode to see if that made it go away (found out in the process that F8 no longer works with Windows 10...you learn something new every day) - Nope, Unified Mailbox still there

Deleted, in order, virtualfolders.dat, foldertree.json and xulstore.json from the Profile, closing and reopening Thunderbird between each one -- Nope, Unified Mailbox still there.

I would love to keep trying to get this thing off my screen if there are any other suggestions?

Actually, if you were trying to use F8 to display the message pane (to read messages in the main window) it does still work in version 52.1.0 (32bit) of Thunderbird under Win 10.

Clear the browser cache and the Windows Temp directory.
Shutdown any anti-virus software you are running.
Download a new copy of the full installer from http://www.mozillamessaging.com/en-US/thunderbird/
Delete the directory C:\Program Files\Mozilla Thunderbird
Run the installer.
Restart the anti-virus program.

Note that your saved messages, address books, settings, passwords, etc (if any) are stored in a different directory from the program files and will not be removed by deleting the directory identified above.

This thread http://forums.mozillazine.org/viewtopic ... 5#p5239885 has a more detailed version of the above instructions if needed.

No, I wasn't using F8 to display the Message Pane; I was trying to use it simply to go into Safe Mode which was tanstaafl's first suggestion. So now I know there is a new way to get to Safe Mode in Windows 10. I have never needed any particular command to display the message pane -- when I open Thunderbird it is simply there.

Well, I cleared the browser cache and the Windows Temp directory, shut down my anti-virus software, downloaded a new copy of the installer, deleted the directory C:\Program Files\Mozilla Thunderbird (well that folder was actually in Program Files (x86) but I assumed that was the equivalent) and ran the installer. I was so sure that was going to work since it seemed to be re-creating everything all over again. Nope. My stubborn Unified Mail Folder/Account still displays. I am so frustrated but I guess at some point I'm going to have to throw in the towel and live with having three accounts when I really only want two. It seems to me that it really shouldn't be this hard -- there should simply be a way to turn off Unified Folders. Although I guess there IS a simple way -- unchecking "Unified" on the Folders Menu. That just didn't work for me for some reason.

I really appreciate you trying to help, but it just doesn't look as though anything other than a full reinstall of Thunderbird, setting everything up as new and losing all my customization and configuration settings (not to mention all of my messages) is going to have any effect, and I'm just not willing to go that far. Nonetheless, thank you so much for your patience and attempts to provide assistance; they are very much appreciated.

One Postscript: the link to another thread which you provided contains within it a link to the installer which is incorrect -- you are sent to a page which has the installer for Firefox but not for Thunderbird.

I think you are still confusing windows safe mode and Thunderbird's safe mode, which are completely unrelated. All that Thunderbird's safe mode doe sis disable add-ons and a few features. That works regardless of what operating system you are using.

Uninstalling Thunderbird rarely helps, most problems (that aren't bugs) are due to something in the profile. You could create a new profile using the profile manager, and then migrate JUST your mail folders and address books to it.

Perhaps we're dealing with a terminology issue here. See this article and please post a screen shot of what you are seeing in the main Thunderbird window -- http://kb.mozillazine.org/Posting_a_scr ... _the_forum
