Discrepancy of Incoming Messages

Post by HikermannMoz »

THIS IS THE PROBLEM THAT STARTED ALL OF THIS THAT I WOULD APPRECIATE HAVING ANSWERED:
- On my PC, Thunderbird messages arrive at either my InBox or Spam files; on my MacBook, if something is (I conclude) a "spam" message it merely disappears; a problem, because frequently -- for example, when Mozilla sends a confirmation of UserID or Password -- some messages go directly to Spam. Outcome? On the MacBook I never receive them; on the PC I do.

THE PROBLEM THAT CAME UP, HOWEVER, IS:
- When attempting to Login to post this issue on Mozilla/Thunderbird "support" forum:
1. I enter my UserID and Password
2. I'm told "The e-mail/username information submitted could not be found"
3. I then go to Register and enter email address
4. I'm told my "email address is already in use"

SO I GO TO THE SUPPOSED "CONTACT US" "SUPPORT" links, and here's what I get:
1. https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/products/thunderbird
2. https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/ge ... ty-support
3. https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/new
4. https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/quest ... hunderbird
5. https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/quest ... bird/other
6. https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/quest ... e-question
7. https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/quest ... q-register

THEN:
- "Almost there! We just need you to create a support forum account!"

SO I ENTER MY EMAIL ADDRESS, ONLY TO GET:
- "This email is already in use!"

SO I GO TO:
1. https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/users/auth
2. https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/users/forgot-username

THEN I"M GIVEN:
- "Retrieve Username" "Forgotten your username? Enter your email address below, and we'll send it to you."

SO I REENTER/SEND MY EMAIL ADDRESS
- for the umpteenth time on your imaginary "support" webpage!

ONLY TO RECEIVE:
- "We've sent an email with the username to any account using nels vocepacifica net."

AND WHEN I GET THAT "CONFIRMATION" EMAIL:
- "Your UserID is: Hikermann" . . . EXACTLY WHAT I"VE BEEN ATTEMPTING TO USE AS A LOGIN!

SO GO TO LOGIN YET ONCE AGAIN: and enter "Hikermann"

AND THEN:
- Since your imaginary "support" webpage refuses to accept my last known Password, I click this link:
- "I forgot my password"

ONLY TO BE TOLD BY YOUR IMAGINARY "SUPPORT" PROGRAM THAT:
- "The e-mail/username information submitted could not be found."

SO, PLEASE DO TELL:
1. How the f'in' crap am I supposed to Login with the UserID YOU YOURSELVES have confirmed, if then you tell me that "The e-mail/username information submitted could not be found."
2. Create a new account when you tell me my email address is already in use, but when I attempt to use it you tell me that "The e-mail/username information submitted could not be found."

What, exactly, is the (your?) problem?

TWO issues to resolve. Anyone have the expertise to provide that resolution?

Much appreciated,
Nels Enns

You appear to have an support.mozilla.org account with the Hikermann username and email address with two threads and one post. However they were posted five plus years ago. https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/user/Hikermann

You could try going on irc.mozilla.org and #sumo channel and see if admins like madasan or another is either guigs or rmcguigan (I forget) is on to help you. Or you could create a second account to post a thread for account help for Hikermann in https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/forums/contributors

Note the mozillaZine forums is independent of *.Mozilla.org as it is not a part of nor run by Mozilla and the two sites do not share accounts. As you can see on bottom of right sidebar and at about link. http://www.mozillazine.org/about/

There is no forums.mozillaZine.org account with name of Hikermann here just to note.

Did you check your junk mail settings in preferences -> security -> junk on the Mac to verify that it was not configured to delete junk mail? The account specific junk settings don't have that option.

I suggest you create an account in these forums. There is no problem asking for help in both the MozilaZine and the official forums though its a good idea if you ask in both for help on the same problem, that you post a link to the corresponding thread.

Thanks:

1. tanstaafl: Your fundamental comprehension of what to shows how embarrassingly less-than-basic is my knowledge; went to T'Bird on the MacBook and followed Preferences - Security - Junk settings business as you directed and, so, yes, the wrong button was clicked and everything on the laptop was being trashed; so now I can look forward to a wonderful new life of being fully aware of all the junk/spam that shows up from the e-universe. Much appreciated.

2. James:
- If mozillazine and mozilla.org are not connected, I don't understand why mozillazine exists -- as it appears the zine and .org forum webpages are exactly the same -- which is very confusing to an uninitiated peasant such as I.
- So, am I understanding correctly that one can post on the zine forum WITHOUT the UserID / Password business, while that is required for the .org site?
- Attempted the irc.mozilla.org link you provided; "The connection has timed out. The server at irc.mozilla.org is taking too long to respond" is all that showed up each time.
- Attempting to jump through all the Sign In hoops @ support.mozilla.org results in the same thing that started this whole hassle recounted in my initial posting: moz claims my password is invalid; clicking the "My password isn't working" link results in "We've sent an email to any account using this address. Please follow the link in the email to reset your password." . . . which results in none of the repeated attempted emails showing up in my T'Bird email InBox (which, today, might be because apparently it's "a server issue" at 1and! which is clogging everything up -- so guess the only response is to wait an hour or a day to find out if the "we've sent" emails actually do show up, and then try again using whatever info that/those contain).

Anyway, I guess the outcome is that I now know that
- there is a difference (of some sort) between zine and .org support forums;
- one can post on zine without needing the username/password
- attempting to resolve the screwup at .org is turning out to be more waste of my time than I'm willing to spend from hereon

Thank y'all nonetheless. Much appreciate your taking time to engage this.

Guess 4808566 posts (+ whatever were lost during the 'upgrade') were pointless...

"If mozillazine and mozilla.org are not connected, I don't understand why mozillazine exists --"

MozillaZine existed long before the official Mozilla forums (SUMO). We're less popular but its useful to also have a independent user community. Compare the different philosophies for KB articles for example. SUMO deliberately limits the number of knowledge base articles, all edits have to be formally approved, and it is quite willing to dumb down content to make it more user friendly. We take the opposite approach. You'll find experts in each community will sometimes link to a KB article from the other community, when needed.

The Thunderbird Council recently decided on their legal, fiscal and cultural home. They decided to get a new deal with the Mozilla Foundation rather than go with the Software Freedom Conservancy (SFC) or the Document Foundation (TDF). But its not a permanent decision, and Thunderbird is now fairly independent. When needs change, they may decide to go elsewhere. https://blog.mozilla.org/thunderbird/20 ... ture-home/ mentions: "We have come to the conclusion that a move to a non-Mozilla organization will be a major distraction to addressing technical issues and building a strong Thunderbird team. Also, while we hope to be independent from Gecko in the long term, it is in Thunderbird’s interest to remain as close to Mozilla as possible to in the hope that it gives use better access to people who can help us plan for and sort through Gecko-driven incompatibilities."

The forums.mozillazine.org has existed since Nov 4th, 2002 and there is some site history at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MozillaZine

Mozilla did not start their own official support forum for desktop Firefox until late 2007 if I recall and then over years later added some other things as listed on https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/ . The Sumo siste did actually allow Guest posting in the first months or longer but discontinued for at least two main reasons. Spam and so people can keep track of their threads/posts there.

irc.mozilla.org is not really a link as you need either a IRC client or a site you can use IRC in a web browser like https://kiwiirc.com/client/irc.mozilla.org/

Since *.mozillaZine.org is not Mozilla there is no *.mozilla.org links on top and or bottom like a typical mozilla.org page normally has like for example the official place you can get hosted Extensions for Firefox https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/extensions/

You need an account registered here and logged in in order to post on all of the forum with exception of Site Discussion.

The forums.mozillazine.org used to allow Guest posting in the Firefox/Thunderbird/SeaMonkey Support sections (up til oh March 2011 if I recall without checking) but due to ever increasing amount of Spam this forum was getting it was stopped. Ever since then new members first post needs approval and then they can post normally. The Site Discussion still allows Guest posting so people can use that for help with their forums.mozillazine.org account.
