Moving to Firefox Support as no bug has yet been identified here.

Re: Adding MIME types to the Applications tab
"Do this automatically for files like this from now on." is greyed out.
when things are greyed out, it is a bug!
so move it back to the right section.

Re: Adding MIME types to the Applications tab
And, of course, you mentioned that that was your issue in your first post, right?

Re: Adding MIME types to the Applications tab
You would first have to know with what content type this file is send.
If it is some generic content type then this would explain why this is happening.
You can check that with this extension:
https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/addo ... p-headers/

Not a bug.thomaz wrote:Its a file from the internet which can be downloaded and i want firefox to download and AUTOMATICALLY open it, no matter which content type it is.
The people who wrote Firefox have their own ideas about how that feature should work.
No doubt they were unaware that browsers should be designed to do exactly what "thomaz" thinks proper.
He/she should contact those errant Mozilla developers directly, we can't help him/her here.

Re: Adding MIME types to the Applications tab
More than likely the part greyed out, " Do this automatically . . . " would not be greyed if the filetype could actually open the file.
It's very likely a Windows system call preventing the file being opened with a package without permissions or capability.

Re: Adding MIME types to the Applications tab
That is the most ignorant statement I've seen here is a long time. Open it with what application? Excel? Word? Adobe? .....thomaz wrote:Its a file from the internet which can be downloaded and i want firefox to download and AUTOMATICALLY open it, no matter which content type it is.
The content type tells the computer what to use. Without a correct content type your computer would need to be clairvoyant.
EDIT: For example for a :
PDF file - Content-type = application/pdf
Excel xlsx file [2007 and later] Content-type = application/vnd.openxmlformats-officedocument.spreadsheetml.sheet
.

Link to the file?
If you could assign "unknown" (or generic) to automatically opening in notepad.exe (maybe you can, don't know?), I'd think you'd be apt to have all kinds of odd "stuff" opening in notepad.

Re: Adding MIME types to the Applications tab
why can i assign every kind of filetype to any kind of application with windows?
and why can't i assign every kind of filetype to any kind of application with firefox?
why do coders always make things so extreme complicated?

Re: Adding MIME types to the Applications tab
That's called an uninformed question.why do coders always make things so extreme complicated?
Data storage is complicated. Try to view a legacy Word Perfect file using Win Word, or a .jpg file using Excel. It doesn't work. That's not because coders intend to make things complicated but because different file types are intended to store different types of data. The optimum file format for an image is not the same as that for plain text or spreadsheet data. Also, a web site has to provide the browser with information on the type of file being downloaded from or viewed from that site. If either of those elements from the web page are wrong or missing, the browser can't handle the file properly.
