FF 55 - Start up speed affected by certain extensions

Work was done to Firefox 55 so start up speeds for those with rather large tab sessions would be really fast:



As a person that usually has roughly 100 tabs open, I was really looking forward to this feature. Unfortunately, the perceived speed increase doesn't feel all that much faster. Read this post for updated info!

Maybe it's because I already utilized tabs on demand and Suspend Tab before Firefox 55.

Anyone in the same boat as me?

You have extensions enabled? These can contribute significantly to load time. If you have extensions, disable them all and try again, this will rule out or confirm that one or more extensions are causing your slow load time.

Yeah, I do have rather a lot, including uBlock Origin (thanks by the way!).

Testing in Safe Mode really showcases this feature quite a bit. Blazing fast!

Now, I have to go through all my extensions to see which one is causing the slow start up speed. Will reply back with my findings.

Looks like the main culprit was with the Suspend Tab extension.

I also tried using Tab Suspender (Tab Unloader) as a substitute, but that also causes Firefox to slow down considerably during start up. I found that the Auto Unload Tab extension is a decent tab unloading alternative so far.

The Text Link extension also contributed to the slow down:

Looks like the author has fixed it, but just needs to release a new version.

Moral of the story -- check your extensions!

Well, from the chart, FF 20 did quite well for itself.
Then up, up & away from there.

I haven't looked at 55, but suppose I'll have to.


And I always thought that Nich was the MemShrink guy. Yet if Dietrich's results hold... you would think everyone would be shouting about it.

Only problem is, so after all these years, you've got some speed back & you've cut your memory footprint - only to be hit in the gut with the end of extensions.

After I found the extensions that were causing my start up load problem, Firefox 55 boots up pretty darn fast compared to Firefox 54. And I'm using 50 extensions, most of them legacy as well! Yeah I know about the impending doom that is v57, but I'll just take this one release at a time and go from there.

I still have e10s disabled and am using 32-bit as long as I possibly can.
