Seamonkey Install Failure on Linux Mint

Post by k6buk »

Greetings:

I just did a new install of Linux Mint 18.2 on a Dell laptop with a 500 GB SSD. I have been using Seamonkey on Linux for years but when I follow the installation instructions on the Seamonkey 2.48 website the program will not run. I am able to unpack the archive using tar jxvf seamonkey-2.48.tar.bz2 and it creates the folder and shows all the files and directories. When I try to run the program nothing happens. If I try to run it from a terminal window I receive the following error:

./seamonkey
XPCOMGlueLoad error for file /usr/seamonkey2/seamonkey/libxul.so:
libXrender.so.1: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory
Couldn't load XPCOM.

Also, in my home directory there are no seamonkey or mozilla directories which used to appear when I unpacked archives in older versions. I do have my old profile, email, address book, etc. backed up.

I would greatly appreciate any assistance anyone may offer with my issue.

Regards,

I would not be surprissed if you are trying to run 32-bit SeaMonkey on 64-bit Linux.

At the moment there really is only a en-US build of 64-bit SeaMonkey for Linux unlike the 32-bit builds. They did briefly have the 64-bit Linux build in Release folder for 2.48 Release initially but then only have it in contrib folder.

Asked the same question a few months back. 64 bit is a contrib build and only available for en-US. You need to install a language pack for other languages.

Moved to official in 2.53+. The new Windows x 64 builds are also still contrib builds in 2.53+. This will also change in the future.

WOW! Thank you so much! This was exactly the problem and thanks so much for answering so quickly. It works perfectly now. I didn't notice that it was a 32-bit version and probably wouldn't have found the problem for months.

Also make sure the SeaMonkey folder has read/write permissions for the user as a easy way is to put it in /home so you can get SeaMonkey updates.

It would be nice if it was more clear the Linux builds on https://www.seamonkey-project.org/ and https://www.seamonkey-project.org/releases/ were listed as 32-bit and not make people think they may be 64-bit or somehow combined or such.

The 64-bit en-US Linux build is official as in built on same machines but likely kept in contrib folder still due to being only en-US locale.

There was a bug filed to make it more clear the 32-bit Linux builds are 32-bit.
Bug 1257256 - State clearly that Linux builds in Downloads Table are for 32bit only

Also
Bug 691752 - [Tracking Bug] Officially provide 64-bit GNU/Linux binaries

That doesn't do anything. Spent most of a day debugging that one. Clicking the executable does nothing. Running it from a text interface actually generates, I kid you not, a "file not found" error.
