pop3 mail server problem

Post by petergo »

hi there

I am using TB ver 52.3.0 and win 10

I have an email account from my ISP and I have one at gmail.com also.

I thought I should change to IMAP, so I followed the directions on the gmail website.

When I send a message from TB from the gmail account set up in TB, I do recieve it in my Inbox in TB for the account from my ISP.

When I select "get messages" in the Gmail account set up in TB, I recive the following error message

"An error occurred with the Pop3 mail server. Mail server imap.gmail.com responded"

BTW, the message does appear in the Inbox on the gmail. com email account page

appreciate help to fix this, thanks, cheers

Did you enable IMAP access for that account on the Google web mail settings page?

That's because you can't change it, you have to replace it See this article -- https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/sw ... ap-account

Hi Dan

when the article you referred to says, make sure the mail provider supports IMAP, does that mean "Gmail" or my ISP ?

If it's Gmail, I believe it does support IMAP, if it's my ISP, I have to call them tomorrow morning during business hours

thnks again

Dan

another quickie, if I may please

I case I make a mistake somewhere, if I have a Mozbackup or a copy of the profile before I make the canges, and after the changes something goes terribly wrong, can I simply restore from the Mozbackup, and be back to where I was, the old fashioned POP account?

thanks Dan

When the article refers to the email provider it means for a specific account. If you have an email address from your ISP and a second email address from Gmail, each would have to support IMAP in order for your to change each to IMAP. If you are only changing one account to IMAP, then only the provider of that account, ISP or Gmail, would have to support that protocol.

Yes, restoring the files of a profile from a backup would set Thunderbird to where it was at the time the back up was made, that is, before the change from POP to IMAP.

g'day Dan

thank you for the information.
I had a heck of a time changing everything back to POP in TB and gmail, so that I could send and receive messages, but all well's that ends well.

I will have another kick at trying to change all to IMAP after I speak to my ISP today.
Feel reassured that if I mess up at any stage, I can restore a backup <smiles>

best wishes to you soemwhere on the right coast
cheers
