Cannot Send Email..receives email fine

Post by Richard1296 »

Latest Thunderbird (55.0.3) on Win7 (64 bit).
I use Centurylink and I can receive email but when I send email I get :

Login to server smtp.centurylink.net failed.

Worked ok till today and I haven't changed anything.
I spent half the day on the phone with their support.
I installed Tbird on another computer that had never been used
for mail till now....same results, can't send email.
I tried Opera mail and another one that I don't remember the name of.
I cannot send email. I tried 2 new profiles in Tbird .

If I go to the webmail app that Centurylink has I can send mail there.
I tried 2 different accounts, both sent just fine and I made sure the
password was copied from Tbird to the webmail accurately
I have the same passwords for sending and receiving.

Any suggestions, because Centurylink says if I can send mail with their
webmail i should be able to send it with Tbird.

Help Please

Webmail doesn't use the same SMTP server an external program like TBird must use, so that doesn't tell you anything about the problem.

It seems most likely that they've got a problem with their SMTP server. It's not unusual for the guys in the back room to not inform their support desks about problems -- we run into it all the time.

In all probability they'll fix the problem within a day or so and everything will miraculously return to normal. Meanwhile you may be stuck with using webmail.

Hi Doug,
You are so right. I had exactly the same problem as Richard, beginning 8/30. CenturyLink Support assured me it was a Thunderbird problem since webmail was working perfectly.

However, just as suddenly as the problem began, it "fixed itself" yesterday, and now I can send email through TB once again. Hallelujah!

Which strongly suggests that the issue was on CenturyLink's side in the first place.

And my email problems were also resolved yesterday. Though their support said it wasn't
their problem but a Thunderbird problem.
Seems their tech support is not very trustworthy ( I'm trying to tactfully say they'd lie to you ).

Sometimes it deception but many times it's ignorance. Those first tier techs are not always given the most up to date or accurate information to work with. If the bosses don't tell them a server is down, they can't tell the customers about it.

Richard1296: Have you been sending BULK emails?
I have had similar experience. In my case I exceeded the "Limited Number" of BULK emails I was sending in one 24hr period. When this happened my gmail account was blocked for 2-3 days and during that period of time I was unable to send any emails. After 2-3 days I was able to send emails again.
