Optimal Process To Install ESR 52

Post by tpaulr »

Afternoon.

I have tested a number of different browser options, the conventional wisdom of moving to 52 ESR seems to make the most sense to me until things shake out post 57.

Is there an optimal process to move from 54.01 to 52?

I have been looking for a concise instructions, i.e., best to uninstall 54 and then install 52, or ????

I'm just not sure how to do this, never downgraded.

Thanks, in advance... :)

Don't downgrade. Install the ESR in a separate directory and create a new profile specifically for that version. You can copy over the elements of the 54.0.1 profile -- http://kb.mozillazine.org/Transferring_ ... _-_Firefox

You can do this if you don't want two versions of FX installed. You can use a v54 profile with v52esr, but you shouldn't use a v55 (and up) profile with v52esr. The line stops at v54.

If we have our Fx54 and Fx52 Profiles backed up and if many of us will be going from Fx56 to ESR 52 and if we choose to copy/paste old profiles,
Do we

A. Uninstall Fx56 > install ESR 52 > Delete Fx56 Profile > Copy/Paste Fx54 [or Fx52?] profile in its place.
or
B. Simply install ESR 52 over Fx56 > Delete Fx56 Profile > Copy/Paste Fx54 [or Fx52?] profile in its place.

If we have both Fx52 and Fx54 profiles, could you please post if there is a functional difference between copy/pasting one or the other for use with ESR 52?
Finally, if we actually have both Fx52 and Fx54 profiles, could you please post why simply deleting existing Profile and copy/pasting Fx52 or Fx54 profile is not okay after installing ESR 52?

Thank you.

Dan, thanks, as always.

Didn't think about that as an option - makes sense... :D

1. Choose A. I've never been a fan of B. That's an old practice. Copying new programs over old and vice-versa is just asking for trouble. For the amount of time it takes to uninstall FX, fixing problems by installing overtop another version just doesn't make sense.

2. I can't see any functional difference by using either a v54 or v52 profile.

3. Simply copy/pasting either profile after installing v52esr is perfectly fine.

Thank you Grizzly.
After uninstalling Fx56 or Fx57, other than Profile folders touched by Fx55 and up of course, what is the list of folders that need to be manually deleted and can you post if and why this is necessary before installing ESR 52?

It's not necessary, but on Win7 the only other folder would be the cache folder. It is located here:

c:\Users\<username>\AppData\Local\Mozilla\

Just delete the Mozilla folder.

L.A.R.: I don't have 55, I stopped updates at 54.XX...

I didn't make a statement, I asked a question from a process perspective, hence the question, what works best?

Dan's suggestion makes sense. 8-)

As long as your profile wasn't touched by Fx55 or above, you can use your Fx54 profiles with ESR 52.
This means that simply uninstalling Fx54 and installing ESR 52 for you and me is the best way to go since we both have Profiles that are fully compatible. (Meaning Firefox 54 or below profiles).

For others whose profiles were touched by Fx55 and above, they need to copy the elements from their Fx55 and above profiles: http://kb.mozillazine.org/Transferring_ ... _-_Firefox

I didn't mean to hijack your thread but it seemed important to question if going the long route of elements copying was really necessary for you and me since we *do* have old personal profiles backed up. Grizzly says we don't have to copy elements if we have old profiles so that means simple uninstall any Firefox version then install ESR 52 and done.

C627627,

No problem, I didn't think you did.

It gets confusing at times, in spite of the longevity of using FF and the interaction on Mozillazine.

In fact, it helped. 8-)

Thanks...

Yep - http://forums.mozillazine.org/viewtopic ... #p14765039

To keep things simple, as I was dealing with specific versions (53 and 54) that I knew would not blow up with 52 ESR, I left out my usual 'blanket advice'. That is - if you downgrade then make a new profile and transfer stuff over and it has to be like that if you don't know the version jump details when giving advice or when downgrade version jump is a large one, i.e. going from, say, 54 to 44, etc.

As I mentioned, in this case, that was not necessary.
