4K Video Downloader
I want to ask the mods to give me a pass on this and not move it to another forum as posting it here will give it the most exposure. (Please?)
Anyway, I have been looking for a good webextension to download YouTube videos as my legacy version is not going to be re-made. I have found a good one on AMO, BUT, was wondering if anyone has used or heard of this:
https://www.4kdownload.com/products/pro ... downloader
This is a standalone application (you can read about it on their site)
It was also mentioned in this article on Digital Trends (a reputable site): https://www.digitaltrends.com/computing ... be-videos/ (you will have to scroll down a bit as they mention a few others)
Has anyone used or heard of this? I am seriously security conscious and using a stand alone application to do the job gives me the willies. I don't want to install something that could possibly not be Kosher. It was mentioned in that article though, so I am tempted, but it seems to good to be true (and you know what they say about that). I just wanted to throw this out there to see if I could get some feedback. Anyone?
Thanks!

I just followed instructions in the link to the digitaltrends site you posted for downloading a movie (a trailer as a test) from youtube using VLC and it works just fine so I'd use that if I were you. You can download the VLC player from here if you haven't got it: https://www.videolan.org/

Are you referring to VLC as opposed to vls Brum?Brummelchen wrote:vls is offering me (only) 1280 is that because only hd capable?
As to the format I think it depends on the uploaded file. My camera dates from about five years ago and can only record in 720x1280 so all my uploaded videos will be in that format.

Re: 4K Video Downloader
Videohelp.com calls it "freeware", https://www.videohelp.com/software/4K-Video-Downloader.
Some of the comments mention something about a "25" limit, fwiw.
I agree with @B, test out with sandboxie.
Command-line, https://www.videohelp.com/software/youtube-dl.
There are GUI's for it (& I'd check them out in sandboxie too .)

Re: 4K Video Downloader
Very presumptuous I must say. Now where exactly in my post did I ask anyone to test it for me? I asked if anyone had heard of it, or used it. I would never want anyone to risk infecting their system - EVER.Brummelchen wrote:so at least you want someone to examine it for you? sorry, no way, time to improve yourself:

I do appreciate the links though.

I think you may have misread something. The free version is limited to 25 videos in a playlist.Brummelchen wrote:vlc is offering me (only) 1280 is that because only hd capable?

Re: 4K Video Downloader
well, this is not firefox related and:Very presumptuous I must say.
maybe, maybe i tried before, dont know.if anyone has used or heard of this
the point for me was that you asked about 3rd-party software - the best way to gain experience is to try it out in a separated environement like sandboxie, the sniffer may help for suspicious connections. you need to know that people often ask about software but dont have any clue to try it. a sandbox is much better than using revo or other uninstaller.
when clicking the key to register a message (in german) tells me that playlist and more than 25 videos are not possible with the free version. afraid i did not found any hint about you wrote, neither in comments or faq. i did not tried further because 25 videos is poor.PS the free version of 4k-downloader is limited to 25 videos and dont support playlists.

Re: 4K Video Downloader
I tracked it down on an old VLC Wiki: https://wiki.videolan.org/VLC_GPU_Decoding/Brummelchen wrote:my bad, i meant VLC.

It would appear that GPU acceleration needs to be enabled in the Preferences menu. However, the current version doesn't display the menu as shown in the Wiki. Instead, go to Tools - Preferences - click "All" bottom left - and then in the Input & Codecs menu expand Video codecs and click FFmpeg. Change the setting on the right where it reads Hardware Decoding to DirectX. Here's a pix: http://imghst.co/67/5sjQU3Y3.PNG
