Have tried:

Would it be easier to uninstall Firefox and reinstall?

No. That will not help you.
All your "stuff", bookmarks etc., are in the Profile folder.....Not in the Program folder.

OK I got as far as the profile folder and then bookmarkbackups, however they are dated 8/10/2017.
When I open it I get this:

Hi,
You don't open it.
Did you try to Restore or Import them, as per the previous article, from the Library?

I think I have now got at least most of them back, nothing in the above seemed to work but I done a search for bookmarks and found some older files that were not showing under `import`and somehow managed to retrieve them.
Now can you tell me how to get the `star` back for the bookmarks, it used to appear at the top right of page and I would click on it to save a page to bookmark.

When I open it I get this:
No need to open backup files manually, launch Firefox, press Ctrl-Shift-B, click "Import and Backup" - Restore - Choose the latest backup.
Sorry for my poor English.

When I did that it only gave back up files for todays date, it was in another different folder I found the correct ones.

P.S. All appears to be working now and have got the bookmark star back also.

You can check if you can find the star in the Customize palette and drag it back to the Navigation Toolbar.
If you do not see the star in the Customize palette then click Restore Defaults window to restore the default toolbar set.
