.desktop links at the command line

We have .desktop links created by FF itself by dragging from URL bar to the desktop. Firefox opens such .desktop-type URL links at the command line, e.g.

firefox ~/Desktop/page.desktop

Since version 56, FF opens some .desktop links correctly but others show in the URL bar as:

file:///home/.../live.desktop

It doesn't actually display .desktop as text, but instead fetches something from the domain, but NOT the URL in the file.

Is there a change in the way FF handles .desktop links at the command line?

There is a known issue with Firefox 56 on some Windows systems where the normal association of .url files with "Internet Browser" gets changed to "Firefox" and that leads to having the shortcuts open a partial cached version of the page instead of fetching the current page. I don't know whether any of that is applicable to Linux.

Thank you. It seems bizarre because FF opens some .desktop URL links correctly and others as file:///. . .

I have published software for people that use their browser as a TV replacement, with remote control channel selection, etc. Now I have several thousand messages from users complaining since FF 56
