All bookmarks stored in places.sqlite?

Post by thoste »

Assume I close Firefox and copy the file "places.sqlite" from the profile folder to the Firefox profile on another computer.

Are then all bookmarks completely transferred?

or do I need some additional (index) files or config files to have the bookmarks available in the second Firefox?

No, I don't want to ex+reimport firefox through Bookmark Manager. I want a file copying method.

That file also includes history, and yes, the one file contains both completely.

If you on Firefox 55 or later, and you want the favicons that go with the places.sqlite (the favicons for the bookmarks, for example), you would also want to copy the favicons.sqlite file.

Edited to add: if the favicons.sqlite file (for Firefox 55 and up) is not copied, the favicons will not be displayed in the Bookmarks until those sites are visited.

concerning his user agent, which points out internet explorer
Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 6.1; WOW64; Trident/7.0; rv:11.0) like Gecko
assumed he might step back to v52esr.

if that UA is fake - really bad idea, can result in wrong shown websites (and will do)

I sit corrected: it also contains downloads. And you also need favicons.squlite.

"Trident...like Gecko" means what?

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trident_% ... _engine%29

Layout engine for Internet Explorer 4.0 and later.

"Like Gecko" means Trident is similar to Gecko as far as how it renders webpages. Remember that IE 4.0 was released after the Netscape browser was in use, for like 2 years later. IOW, it works like Gecko works

Thank you for the comments so far.

One more question: If I do NOT copy the favicons.sqlite then these favicons are re-downloaded the next time I visit the page.

Correct?

Notte that you need to remove existing places.sqlite-shm and places.sqlite-wal SQLite temp files when you copy places.sqlite to a profile with Firefox clopsed.

Windows NT 6.1; WOW64 = 64-bit Windows 7, 32-bit browser

I don't think ESR is recommended for Windows 7 except to run legacy plugins.

copying forth and back nowerdays could cause issues, in special from 55+ to lower versions. i was only assuming. i have a v54 profile where a copy is for v55 and where is a copy for v57 which is now my working profile (firefox 57). no mixing up places, if - then only upward.

ESR has more advantages than plugins, people stepped back because of extensions! for silverlight people have to use v50 or another browser.

Why when 32-bit Firefox 52 ESR on Windows will allow other Plugins besides Flash Player to run like in Fx 51.0 and earlier Releases. This is very well known.

https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/npapi-plugins
Important: The Windows 64-bit version of Firefox 52 ESR only supports the Adobe Flash and Microsoft Silverlight plugins. If you also need support for Java or other plugins, choose the Windows (32-bit) download.
