because my MBA travels, I don't like AC to run on passwords. User IDs fine, but not passwords.
I can't seem to clear one entry no matter what I try.

Might the particular entry be store in a cookie (insecure, I'd think) rather then as a "password"?

I use a third party tool for entering sensitive data called Keepass. The context menu provides an option to copy/paste username and/or passwords without revealing either. See the screenshot on the home page: https://keepass.info/
