Thunderbird Mail Stores

Post by dribgnikcom »

Is Thunderbird ever going to get a good pluggable mail store that uses sqlite?

Or will the only two options ever be mbox and maildir?

Yes, maildir is better than mbox, but come on, this is 2017, time to move on to something more professional.

I'd say sqlite is unlikely

Honestly, is this the best option we have in 2017?

Individual emails stored in hundreds of plain text files?

If you don't like that switch to mbox for the message files.

How is the account set up in Thunderbird, as POP or IMAP? Find out using menu path Tools->Account Settings->Server Settings->Server Type at the top right of the dialogue.

The developers main focus (other than maintenance) seems to be on making preparations for developing a next generation of Thunderbird that will work without several technologies that Mozilla is dropping support for. They don't have the resources available for adding SQLite support to the pluggable storage interface. I vaguely remember reading about a decision about 8 years ago to only add built-in support for maildir and leave implementing SQLite to anybody that wanted to write a add-on for it.

I'm still using Thunderbird 47, but I keep wondering about this. Can someone please confirm that mbox and maildir are the only two options available in the latest beta please?

What major changes are there between 47 and 5x other than "rust" encoding?

Thanks

Yes. I just checked using the latest nightly build.
