tbird 52.4.0
on osx 10.12.6
tbird can stall out with a beachball while auto populating email addresses in the To field. Usually this happens after the machine and tbird has been idle for a while. The macbookpro is on power and does not sleep.
Be nice if this behavior was fixed.

Does the same thing occur if you launch the application in Mozilla Safe Mode? http://kb.mozillazine.org/Safe_mode
Do you have Thunderbird set up to access the Mac address book or some LDAP address server?
