Popup message every time Thunderbird starts

Post by billee »

After the most recent update (52.4.0), when I start Thunderbird a message box pops up for about 1 second. It goes off so quickly that I can't read the whole thing. Something about checking for compatibility?

Any way to get rid of this?

Does the same thing occur if you launch the application in Mozilla Safe Mode? http://kb.mozillazine.org/Safe_mode

Yes, in safe mode it pops up for a second then disappears just prior to the "safe mode" message box.

If no improvement using Safe Mode, do you have the same problem if you create a new profile and test it with no extensions or non-default themes installed?

Dan: Thanks for your continued help.

I tried it with my wife's profile. Same popup even in safe mode. I was able to determine that the popup says it's checking the compatibility of add-ons. After several tries, I was able to click on the "cancel" box in the popup (the only box not greyed out) and the problem still occurs in normal and safe modes.

It seems like it's an "artifact" left over from the last update. Normally I would expect to see a compatibilty check only during the first run after the update.

You might try changing an option. Menu path Tools->Addons->Extensions->click on the "Gear" icon->select "Reset all addons to update manually."

That didn't fix the problem. I was able to capture a screen shot and it says "checking your add-ons for compatibility with this version of Thunderbird. This may take a few minutes"

Try changing the extensions.update.enabled pref to false, then redo DanRaisch's suggestion, then restart.

I toggled auto extension update to false in the config editor . I noticed that when I try to disable auto update in the extensions menu, the check mark for auto update reappears again when I restart. The pop up window problem still occurs.

Is it worth trying a re-install of Thunderbird? Can I do it without losing existing settings and emails?

Usually, no, but you can try that if you wish without losing data.

Clear the browser cache and the Windows Temp directory.
Shutdown any anti-virus software you are running.
Download a new copy of the full installer from https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/thunderbird/all/
Delete the directory C:\Program Files\Mozilla Thunderbird
Run the installer.
Restart the anti-virus program.

Note that your saved messages, address books, settings, passwords, etc (if any) are stored in a different directory from the program files and will not be removed by deleting the directory identified above.

This thread http://forums.mozillazine.org/viewtopic ... 5#p5239885 has a more detailed version of the above instructions if needed.

Popup message: Checking your add-ons for compatibility with this version of Thunderbird. This may take a few minutes…

The problem could be corrupt extension files.
