Problem with Add Ons
I am having problems installing add ons.
I have had the hdd formatted at the computer store, installed windows 7, then upgraded to windows 10, and then the latest fall update.
At every point I have tried to add add ons to firefox but have been prevented by a "communication error." I have also downloaded new versions of firefox two or three times (56.0.2) so it does not seem to be a corrupt installation.
I am pretty sure I am not infected, running scans as I write this, and my other computer is having no problems installing add ons, so I am frustrated and out of ideas. Getting peppered with tracking cookies too, not happy about that.
Helpful suggestions would be appreciated.

Re: Problem with Add Ons
As a workaround, right-click the Add to Firefox button and choose Save Link As. Save the XPI file to your desktop. Afterwards open the Add-ons Mananger, click the cog button next to the search box, and choose Install Add-on from File.
I don't know what's causing it, but a handful of people have been experiencing this issue. It might really be a server problem that only affects them.

Hi Gingerbread Man,
Thanks for the tip, bit fiddly but it worked. And that is the main thing.
I am smiling now!

Were you using the old or new version of AMO?

Sorry should have read that post a bit more closely.
The site I used is https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/
I did not know there was an old and a new version of the site.

The new site uses a black or very dark blue header at the top of the page rather than the bright blue of the old site.
Another way to figure it out... scroll down to the bottom. Do you find a link for "View classic desktop site"? If yes, you are on the new site. If you see "View the new site" you are on the old site.

Thanks for that, it appears I am using the new site.
And just to add to the confusion I have just successfully installed an add on from it. Go figure.

Re: Problem with Add Ons
I recall reading of a bug report on addons.mozilla.org that threw a "communications error" in some cases and it was on the list of things to fix. Hopefully your latest experience is an indication they fixed it.Russell C wrote:Thanks for that, it appears I am using the new site.
