I have two email accounts, one for school and one Gmail. I forward all of the school emails to my Gmail account, however, I still want to be able to send mail using my school email address.
Since there is no email on the school email account, I have no need to set up a POP/IMAP account. Is it possible to configure Thunderbird so that I can send mail from either email address, yet not have the incoming mail server setup? I do not want to see the school email folders in the left column of the folder tree.

You should be able to do that. http://kb.mozillazine.org/Thunderbird_: ... TP_Servers

I tried that. While I am able to have multiple SMTP servers, it does not list the alternate accounts in the compose window. They only appear as an option when the corresponding IMAP/POP account has been configured.

Have you looked into using an identity? https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/using-identities
