Fx57: mozsocial.cliqz.com unsafe connection

Hi,

about:config reveals a "social.whitelist" : https://mozsocial.cliqz.com

When trying to connect to this "social" url, Firefox rejects it with:

Connexion not secured / SSL_ERROR_BAD_CERT_DOMAIN

Is "mozsocial.cliqz.com" really necessary ?
Or can it be safely removed ?

Doesn't answer your question, but...
Firefox by default shares data to:
BY DEFAULT, gee, that's sweet.
(Had I known that, I wouldn't have paid my subscription fee.)

It seems cliqz.com can be safely removed (ie blacklisted).
Not very clear what is this "social" thing, with unsafe connection.
Mozilla should contact them for clarification, and try to improve their security level.
Should be corrected for Fx58.

So, mozilla now decided that tracking all user activity and sending that data to a third party called “Cliqz”, based in Munich, Germany, majority owned by Burda media, a “news” and print (read: mostly tabloid) media group (Bunte, Focus, Chip, Freundin) is a good idea…

I can only shake my head. Clearly Firefox is the “privacy browser” as they claim!!1!

The dumb stuff they pulled in the past just pales in light of this.

Initially they will “test” this “feature” in Germany with 1% of the user base there, they say. It doesn’t sound like it’s exactly opt-in, but opt-out, so make sure your data isn’t siphoned off next time you install/update Firefox."

You can remove Cliqz from Firefox but it takes a little digging.
Open about:config and put cliqz in search, you'll see several items pop up.
You can modify an item where it is in a line of other items by deleting it but care must be taken with syntax.
You can also blank any related URLs for Cliqz specifically.
I would suggest if you modify any thing to keep a written record of the item name and if there's a long string (value) copy the contents before editing
to a text editor in case you need to return it to it's original condition.

Hi, Cliqz employee here,

You just found the last remaining bits of the “Social API” (https://blog.mozilla.org/blog/2013/05/1 ... h-firefox/).
With Firefox 58, it will be completely retired and scrapped off the browser (see: https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1406193).

Note however that the Cliqz experiment currently running for German Firefox users, has nothing to do with the SocialAPI.
