It's possible to have tabs and the min/max/close buttons on the same row to the exclusion of the title of the page by unticking "Title bar" in Customize mode. For this, one has to have GTK 3.20 or later. This frees up some vertical space.

But there still remain a few pixels above the tab bar. What is their purpose? And is it possible to get rid of those pixels?

Wow, thanks for this tip!
I would have never ever found this by my own, yet I always wanted to hide the Titlebar just like it is possible on Windows (or Chrome on Linux).
I see a 1-2 pixel? row above the Tabs, it gets colored above the active Tab here, so I guess it depends on the theme if this 1-2 pixel-row is used for highlighting the active tab or not...
