I want to be able to use a shortcut key to shift focus and format text inside another application. I've discovered the concept of 'accesskey' and the guidance in the knowledge base (http://kb.mozillazine.org/Ui.key.chromeAccess). I've seen that all the settings in about:config are correctly defaulted and that ALT+ i (for example) should enable me to apply italic to a selected word. But I can't get it to work.
Can anyone help, please?

The Keyboard API has been changed since 2006, and maybe changed more than once in 50+ versions.
Here are a couple of recent support pages related to accesskey and the Keyboard API.

A mind is a terrible thing to waste. Mine has wandered off and I'm out looking for it.

Thanks. I'll have a look at those pages.
