Forbid FF from loading images, HOW ?

Post by Ninho »

FF 52 (ESR). I've sought the (dumbed down) menus, preferences, even about:config, searched Mozilla help on line : no joy ! Praytelll, HOW TO DISABLE the autmatic fetching, loading and rendering of IMAGES (fixed or, deity forbid, animated) ? In the past it used to be an easily accessible menu option, I can(t find any visible user interface to do it now.

In general it could be said that Phoenix/Firebird/Firefox culminated sometimes between versions
0.7 and 0.9. It's been running downhill since, slower and wlower and dumber and dumber and with all the commercialisation and dirty tricks. Oh well what I'm asking is so simàple, NO PICTURES unless on demand (clicking on a place holder). Why is it hidden ? Did the devs forget the WWW is first and foremost a TEXT based medium ?

The above "replies" (about Lynx) are off-topic / (bad)jokes !
I want to / have to run Firefox, and that it does NOT load any image automaticly
(without being positively told to load them, individually). This is a reasonable requirement, isn't it ? C'me on guys ! There has to be a preference, only the not so smart Moz/FF guys felt like burying it out of view. Or else... OH what a world !

Your message shows that you are using NT 5.0 (Windows XP). IIRC Modern Firefox will only run on XP with SP3.

Speaking of Firefox. Your message shows that you posted using Firefox 3.5.19 which is from Oct 2015. I doubt you will find someone here still using that release.

Good luck.

Yes, but the OP's first post was made on a Linux OS using Firefox version 52.0. Not sure but it seems more than one system is in use.

True. Since I have no answer he should tell you which one.

My 'bad' was remembering lynx and mentioning that. Sorry. OT

No need to be sorry. Also, please do NOT try to outsmart a poster and/or guess the OS/browser/Version he may be using for a given post (the user agent can be and usually is faked here, for good reasons). Can you answer my question, re. suppressing automatic loading of images on reasonably modern versions Firefox, including FF 52 as stated in the OP - which is what I use on Linux ? TIA !

Although you can do this in Firefox, it's more convenient to use an add-on like Image Block X or Image Video Block.
Ninho wrote:I've sought the (dumbed down) menus
Right-click an empty area of the web page and choose View Page Info. In the window that opens, click Permissions. Scroll down to "Load images". Uncheck "Use Default" and then click the "Block" radio button. To undo this quickly, you can click the location bar icon to the left of the address.

To control images globally, set permissions.default.image to 2 to disable them all, or 3 to disable third-party images only.
To stop animated images, set image.animation_mode to either once or never. Of course this is pointless if you won't show images in the first place.

The developers claimed people were breaking web pages by unchecking "Enable images" and "Enable JavaScript", and forgetting or not realizing what they did. So they were removed.

Give this a go and works up to Firefox v56 - https://addons.mozilla.org/en-GB/firefo ... age-block/

If that's not right for you, then there are other Image Toggle buttons (it's very simple coding to do that job) on the AMO (Addons) site.

The world has moved on from Arpanet maybe you should realise that fact

Thanks @All, special thanks @Gingerbread Man :=)

@Frank Lion: hmm, "image toggle" buttons" may prevent the display of images and stuff, but would they prevent them being fetched and downloaded first ?

@malliz : "The world" is vast and varied. Not everyone at every moment by far has the ressources in bandwidth and processing power, etc, to download and display an insane amount of most often uninformative (if not plainly adverse) - images and stuff. Useful Information carried in Www pages remains mostly textual to this day,
as evidenced by the "content-type:TEXT/html" of an overwhelming majority of such pages.

Why ask me when the author of that extension, on the link I gave you, has already spent an hour of their life explaining in detail on the linked page what the extension does?

Try reading it.
