OmniKey 3121 SmartCard Reader and FireFox 57

Post by ratterman »

I'm running Windows 10 Pro 64 bit version. I have the latest version of FireFox (57.0.3) and also have Microsoft's Edge browser (41.16299.15.0). One of my devices is a HID OmniKey 3121 USB smarcard reader. The HID device works just fine with the Edge browser but there seems to be now way I can get it to work with the FireFox. Anyone know how to correct this?

Thanks

.
I suspect since Edge is integrated into the Win OS while FF is a standalone application, that may be the reason. I would think you would have more luck with the vendor's support.

you need a driver, ofc
https://www.hidglobal.de/drivers

but i think for firefox you need a plugin and that is no longer possible to use.
(or use a previous firefox version, recommended firefox 52.2.x (ESR) portable for this reason)

Yep, I need a plugin and can't find one for the latest version of FF.

NPAPI is no longer usable = no plugin (except flash) possible -> ESR, please read again my previous answer!

If you mean a actual NPAPI Plugin and not a Extension then only the Flash Player Plugin from Adobe will run in Firefox 52 and later Releases.

As said you can use the Firefox 52 ESR to use other NPAPI Plugins like Java, Silverlight and such.

So I'm obviously missing something here - I'm not a developer but only a somewhat technically savvy user at this point. I contacted HID who point me to a site that discusses installing the 3121 for use with a CAC using FireFox. Essentially this boils down to loading an ActivClient (which I did NOT use because it isn't free and is on maintenance by HID) or an Open Source solution. I elected to download the OpenSC solution and install that. This at least makes FireFox recognize the reader is present an, apparently, read the card because it immediately provides the prompt “Please enter the master password for the PIV_II (PIV Card Holder pin).”. But when I enter the PIN there is a problem because, apparently, no certificate is ever opened and presented to the site to which I'm seeking access.

Seems to me this has to be a configuration issue of some sort because, at this point, the browser knows about the reader but doesn't seem to successfully access the SmartCard to get the cert for the website.
