Firefox 57 Nvidia driver crashing - Win7?

Post by Necronomicon »

Since I installed FF 57, nVidia driver keep crashing at random. No matter on what webpage I'm on. Currently I disabled hardware acceleration to see if it will happen (as an advice). But, new problem occured by disabling HA. All pages are choppy while scrolling. Especially on images. Even Options page on FF.

Is there any way to fix any of this?

undo overclocking and try again.

open
C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\WER
and search for crash reports concerning nvidia
or look in to windows event-log or reliability report (system control > system > maintenaince)

It has nothing to do with overclocking. 45.0.x and ESR version worked fine.
Events from about:crashes :

https://crash-stats.mozilla.com/report/ ... 0870180117
https://crash-stats.mozilla.com/report/ ... e4c0180117

And one from shockwaveflash:

https://crash-stats.mozilla.com/report/ ... 3e90180120

On all of these events, nVidia driver crashed. It freezes whole PC for about 10-20 seconds, and then it recoveres "nVidia driver recovered....".

And as I wrote above, this didn't happened when I was using v45 of FF.

shutdownkill means your firefox is not ended naturally, its broken down.

current nvidia for you (installed: 387.92)
http://www.nvidia.de/download/driverRes ... /129115/de

>> NPSWF32_26_0_0_131.dll

you wont find some here maintaining such old crap, current is v28. v26 has to crash - and it is high vulnerable.
firefox can work without flash, and there are only few sites left using flash, no advantage.
if firerox is crashing due flash -> update or uninstall flash.

have you tried the common solutions?
eg https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/fi ... responding

as there are
- safe mode
- fresh profile
- windows safe mode with network

but i stand - its all upon the driver.

Yes I tried that. But, same addons I'm using as before, except Classic Theme Restorer (now done by userchrome). So there were no problems with previous versions of FF.

For flash, well, will wait for new version. Currently it is latest.

FF 57 was freshly installed.
Prior to installation, I cleared FF from cache and uninstalled all addons, copied profile folder (just in case), uninstalled Firefox with Revo (removing all instances), installed FF57, created same profile name and put same location (when I installed SSD I moved Profile to HDD, to reduce write/read from SSD), booted up and everything was working, until first TDR.

Currently I'm on 387.92 driver, because this one is currently stable. I usually skip few drivers until I'm certain some newer is stable. One newer version gave me 5C more heat than previous, one gave me first time TDR's (restarting computer, starting game), and even latest and prior to latest, version will not save dynamic range to full.

Maybe it is driver problem, but maybe not. Because FF 45 was working without a hitch.

Currently I'm on 387.92 driver, because this one is currently stable.
because it runs stable on your system - regular systems are recommended to use the newest stable which i linked for you (nvidia wont offer it when unstable). if it wont work stable then its again your system failing, cant say you other.
windows safe mode with network
you really tried THAT? i have doubt.

You're pointing me to a latest driver and then say that nVidia drivers do not have problems? Well, for your info, GeForce forums is full of complaints about their drivers. Nothing new.

Safe mode will do nothing for me, because drivers are not loaded. Of course that safe mode will work. Becuse there is no nV driver loaded, thus there is no TDR triggering.

Also:

https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1419264
https://forums.geforce.com/default/topi ... x-tdrs-/6/

Everybody complains with combination of Windows 7, nVidia drivers from 385.69 an up, and FF 57+.

So there is something in FF 57 and above, that triggers something in nV drivers 385.69 and above, that causes TDR.

FYI, nothing else on my PC or anybody (who use stable drivers), triggers TDR. Just FF.

And I asked if there is some workaround, beside unchecking HWA in FF, that disables this problem. Such as about:config items.

Do not think I'm a moron, because I tried much everything and I'm in IT for over 35 years.

Try the suggestion in this article: https://www.ghacks.net/2018/01/22/impro ... -hardware/

When you install Nvidia drivers, what do you do exactly?

What I do is to use a third party uninstaller called DDU (Display Driver Uninstaller) to remove the current drivers in Windows Safe Mode before installing the latest version. You can download DDU from here: https://www.wagnardsoft.com/forums/view ... ?f=5&t=976

As regards the drivers version we're currently on v390.65. The latest version addresses the issue of Meltdown/Spectre vulnerabilities in Nvidia GPUs so it's advisable to upgrade a.s.a.p.

Just tried FF 58 (marked as solved), but it crashed, so I reported it to bugzilla. There is something definetly wrong here. We'll have to wait for both sides to see what actual issue is, what is triggering that kind of response. Hope it is very soon.

@Reflective

NVidia GPUs are not vulnerable, they are just making it less painfull with CPUs. How to explain...to prevent drops in gaming when CPUs are dealing with gaming along with GPU.(when patches are installed via win update and/or BIOS update).

I'm really not bothered with that. I'm not holding anything important on my computer. :)

I`m running same 387.92 Nvidia driver in Firefox 52.5.3 ESR version with no driver problems.
You may want to try that version if you choose to until they fix whatever causes the crash in v 57/58.
At least the ESR version is current with security updates and is before many of the major changes in later versions.

I am running old Nvidia drivers 331.82 and have no issues with FF 57 or FF 58.

I would use DDU to uninstall the current Nvidia driver, and just re-install the driver of the same version or any version really.

Generally driver issues are because the driver itself is corrupt. All vid card drivers can get corrupt after a time, especially when you install and uninstall them a lot.

DDU Instructions - Nvidia
1. Get this program, here: https://www.wagnardsoft.com/ ...get the latest version, and save it to your desktop.
2. Get your vid card driver here, use the Manual Search: http://www.geforce.com/drivers ...save this to your desktop.
3. Run DDU (Display Driver Uninstaller) choose the "Highly Recommend Option", and just do what it tells you. If it wants to go into "Safe Mode", let it.
4. After it's done and comp has rebooted to normal mode, just double click the Nvidia driver to install. If it want's to reboot, let it.

It seems that putting layers.mlgpu.enable-on-windows7 to flase in about:config works. I'm not having any crashes...for now.
